Thanks for the tour. How big a farm? What was the crop? I see Austrailia has a thistle problem, also. I fight them evey year.

OI, Mick, thank god for high speed internet!

Great hunting camp and the hogs look yummy. You're a lucky guy to be able to go hunting with scenery like that. (Wife???)

Anyhow, I look forward to hearing more on hunting the outback!

G'day Rick

The farm at Nyngan (600kms west of Sydney) is 24,000 acres, the crop this year is wheat, 9.5 thousand acres of it.
They also run sheep (6000) and cattle (around 800 atm).

In other seasons they grow cotton, oats, beans and basically anything that will grow depending on the amount of rain that has fallen, the stock numbers obviously vary depending on the seasons as well.

The Mudgee farm is 3000 acres, mainly mountains as you can see, and they run 4000 sheep on it and get AAA wool off em every year, plus their lambs are bringing $AU 100 each this year.

The thistles are a problem but its contained to the peaks of the mountains where the sheep camp, they will be dead in the middle of January when the heat hits us.

Some of the other places I hunt on are measured in square miles rather than acres, the biggest one being Bollards Lagoon in South Aus at just on 7000 sq miles, hehe, that's bigger than most of the countries in Europe .

Let me know if you want further info, and also if there is a more appropriate board to post the info on

Hi Maddog

Hehe, yeah broadband rocks , sorry to those on dial-up connections, but I made the pics as small as I could.

The scenery is nice, and yes so are the girls, hehe, one is my daugher and the other one is my sister in-law .

I'll gladly post more pics and stories for you guys, just let me know which forum is best suited for it, I assume you want to keep this board on topic ? .

Am heading out to Mudgee again this weekend, so will have some more pivs for you guys next week

MadMick,

I figured it was a BIG spread. I worked at an Army Ammunition Plant that was on 9000 acers so have a little bit of an idea of the size. I own 120 acers... about enough ground to turn that tractor around on.

I had no problems with receiving the photo's or your posting them on the Savage forum... and they are great. There is a "Photography" forum out on the main index but if you post there please advise so I/we don't miss them. I think we all have an interest in seeing the Great Outback. It will probably be the closest most of us get.

Yeah mate, hehe, we have cattle stations here that are bigger than some of your states , and the good thing is, I have access to a [bleep] of them

LOL, the horse paddock on my inlaws place is 640 acres or one square mile

What other type of game do/can you hunt? I didn't know you had goats.

G'day Rick

On that particular property we get rabbits, feral cats, foxes, goats, pigs, deer and a [bleep] of roos . We also find black snakes and brown snakes (3rd deadliest in the world), there.

The roos are shot on behalf of the property owner who is allocated a certain number per year to cull depending on the season, we get a lot of anti-gun and animal rights groups spew about shooting them, but when you consider there were an estimated 14 million roos here when Capt Cook landed in 1788, and the numbers are now estimated at 60 million, I don't see WTF they are crying about .

Further west and north, we can hunt the same again, plus Dingoes (wild dogs), brumbies, wild donkeys, camels, turkeys, a vast variety of birds, and in the far north you get buffallo and crocs if you're lucky.

We also have the worlds deadliest snake living in and around the centre of Aus, and he is one mean son of a bitch (Fierce Snake or Western Taipan). Out of the worlds 20 most deadly snakes, we are blessed with 17, including the top 3, hehe, really makes you pay attention to anything moving in the grass

And what kind of deer are we talking here, I know New Zealand has those Red Stags, I was just wondering what you have in Australia?

Better yet, lets get our 99's loaded up and go visit Mick and find out for ourselves!!!

Mad Mick. Have you used any '99s to harvest all this game that is available? Rusty Z

G'day Rusty

Unfortunately the only Savage firearms I have ever owned are the ones mentioned at the beginning of this thread, and I have never shot anything with em (except a coke can ).

I would love to use one to hunt, but they are just too pretty and well made to actually take out bush and use, besides that, they now belong to Oink anyway, so if he decides to take one out bush, I might get the chance to blood it yet

ROFL, mate, nothing wrong with horse meat, you prolly wouldn't know the difference between it and beef anyway.

As for the deer, I am not a deer hunter as such, (we have fallow deer on the property I shoot on), as there are not enough on there to be a problem, but once they grow in numbers I will start shooting them.

We also have all the one's on this page Aussie Deer
