Red Deer, thats what I was thinking of, not Red Stag!

Close enough though I guess.

During an average year, what quantities of what animals would you normally shot? Is this for sport/food or at the request of landowners to reduce population? This is very interesting.

Deer hunting here is for sport/food. I think all states issue hunting tags as a way to make money and control the population. There is a lot of money spent in the US each year in connection with deer hunting. Strange to hear them referred to a "feral". Farmers complain about crop loss and the insurance companies complain about the damage done from hitting them on the roads but I don't think Federal or State culling has taken place anywhere.

Hard to answer as each state has different laws.

Here in New South Wales (where Sydney is the capital city) we have a range of feral animals to hunt!

Rabbits, Hares, Cats, Pigs, Goats, Deer, Dogs, to name the most common. The further west you go the chances of camel, donkeys & horses, but that would be in the next couple of states. Anything feral is not native to this country but introduced from O/S, we have a wide selection!

How many in a year? depends how often you get away, if you have a property to shoot on you can take as much as the owner allows, most is not eaten, it depends where they are shot, their age, the type of country, their feeding habits etc.

Hope that helps.

Regards.

Hi Rick

I see Oink has mostly answered your question, I have been down and out for a few days <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />.

There really is no average year for us here as the climate controls the game numbers quite well, not too mention most people not wanting to venture out in the bush in 50 + C, and yes I have done it on several occasions.

I have shot 84 pigs in 4 days once, 54 three weeks later and 67 two weeks after that, that year/season I guess my pig numbers were well over 300.

Rabbits I have shot 1500 + in a week, without trying, those days are gone now though with the release of the calicivirus in 1996, a typical weekend now will see 5 or 6 rabbits, unless you specifically set out to get just bunnies.

Foxes & Feral Cats, will vary as the rabbit number do of course, but I rarely go away without seeing/shooting at least one or two.

Goats, on most properties I go to there are feral goats, in most cases now the property owners don't want them all shot as they eat just about anything (meaning the crap that normal stock doesn't eat), plus they are also worth as much if not more than sheep in the later years. We can still shoot one or two if we like though, either for meat, trophy or just to add to the photo collection <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.

Wild dogs (Dingoes), these critters can be found in most states, but mainly in SA and QLD as the Dingo Fence was built to keep them out of NSW. They love to kill sheep and cattle, and will kill for the fun of it, I have seen it first hand. These can be cunning little buggers, but can also be extremely stupid when young, I have shot more than I can count and they still bring a $AU10 bounty in QLD, hehe, makes the beer taste all that much better <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />.

Kangaroos, although still illegal to hunt, are shot by the thousands every year at the request of property owners, they are allocated a certain amount of "tags" each year depending on the season and that's how many they can cull. I have seen upwards of 5- 600 shot in one night. They also cause an astounding amount of insurance damange to cars every year, and as I stated in an earlier post, they now outnumber people here 3 to one so it shouldn't be long before we stop listening to woolly tree huggers and declare open season on em <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Deer also depend on the state you are in, here in NSW they are open slather all year around as long as you have permission to hunt the land, usually I leave them be as I don't see too many on the places I shoot, but the numbers are building so the day is rapidly coming when Deer will be added to the list <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

From memory we have had several Govt culling excersises take place in NSW, mostly in National Parks, how's that for typical Govt bungling, the one place you would like to take the family to maybe see a wild deer, and the Govt decide to shoot the [bleep] out of them <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />.

Anyway, sorry for the rant mate, anything else you need/want to know just ask, I'm sure I left some critters out of the list, but they are the main ones hunted on a regular basis <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Sorry to ask a dumb question but I thought the 1895 was a side eject lever action. When I've seen these advertised they look more like a 1899 model? That is top eject? Can someone please clarify this for me.

Thanks

Yes "rustyzipper" they are shot, but it does depend in which state( county) you are in.

Some places are OK and others are not. If they are in a "national park" there are all sorts of problems with the "do gooders" even if permission has been given!

It"s a good news item! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

I have no problems with ridding the countryside of an overpopulated species. Particularly if they are an introduced species. They must compete with the indiginous species. Not good for the indigs. Good luck with your antigun politician overpopulation. We have a bit of a problem here too. They all need to be culled. G'day Mick and Oinksec Rusty Z. From Misery, USA

Thanks for the welcome, but I have to ask? Where the F**K is Misery <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> what state and close to "where"?

Yep, introduced animals here are a problem eating and competing with our native animals, cats and foxes in my opinion being the worst, they kill and eat anything.

The anti gunners are having a ball, we are being screwed in the worst possible way, semi auto rifles a couple of years ago, handguns now, and next will be high powered hunting rifles with scopes, or "sniper rifles".

Of course, most of them think thats its savage to hunt and kill "any" animal, introduced or not! Tough luck for our native animals!

Not a very good situation as a collector or hunter!

Thanx for the welcome, its great to be here and pass on some info to blokes that are interested. Hehe, I (like Oink) would love to know where Misery is, I thought it was in my backyard <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Yes mate, they are both a pest and they are culled, whether it be by the National Parks or private land owners.

I have seen mobs of up to 150 running rampant on a property in QLD, the owner there told me to bring *lots* of ammo on my next trip <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.
