I had a winchester m1917 laying around so I figured what the heck, its time for a 416rem. Had my smith screw on a 22" douglas bbl and make sure it feeds. threw in a timney trigger and found a piece of black walnut for the stock. Picked up a recoil pad that I have to grind to fit and then its off to CAS for finishing. Scope is a VX-II 1x4 I've had expensive guns and cringed when I banged it, etc. when all said and done I will have spent less than a factory gun (which I would still turn in for some semi-customizing to things I like). Should be fun.

That looks like a nice piece of wood from here, Joel. Who did the work? John

Actually I got the rough stock from a guy who post here and also on AR. I inletted it. Its not perfect but since I'm still learning, I think it turned it out pretty good.

Not trying to knock the rifle cause it looks real sweet, but is the scope a little high?

I was kinda worried about that too, since I had the rings laying around, I figured I would give them a try. surprising though its quite comfortable for me.

I just got back from the ole lady's shop using her belt sander for the recoil pad and with the pad, the rifle weighs 9.5lbs without ammo as is. She has a state certified scale there so I figured what the heck.

I looked at it again, and the cheek piece is pretty high as well, so there ya go, AND . . . . it might be the fact that the front of the scope is not belled that give more of an illusion. Like I said before . . . . . . SWEET rifle. Kill some bears.

I was going to build a 416Rigby on a 1917 until I added up the costs involved and then discovered the CZ. BUT, the way you have done it here makes sense. I have a 1917 Remmy in the safe that is a wildcat 338 based on the 8mm RemMag case. I have killed a few Elk with it as well as a few African critters. I have loaned it to a client or three in Africa and the US and it is a very deadly and seemingly lucky rifle. Thought about building a 505 Gibbs on one someday. Could leave the factory stock with the steel buttplate on it and use it as my 'loaner' rifle...... Those 1917's are a great basis for a custom. Good luck and go forth into the wilds to make lots of big holes in lots of big critters. Maybe you can bring it to Africa someday. It is a good one.

Too bad you messed up a Winchester 1917, they are getting to be worth the price of a new rifle in .416 Rem.

I got one more in the safe that is still 30-06. I was thinking along the lines of a 358norma or something but it shoots to good with the original bbl to mess it up. Its still sporterized though. middle one (obviously) is my other winchester'17

Like I said before . . . . . . SWEET rifle. Kill some bears. I like scopes mounted a little higher, especially on a heavier recoiling rifle. I think having your head up helps with recoil mitigation.

I have a 1917 remington sporterized, so this is an interesting thread. It has a decent walnut stock, is drilled for scope, and has a Williams peep fitted.
I have never shot it, picked it up at a gun show. It is still an 06, I haven't decided whether to make something else (have plenty of 06s).
Would sell it for $250 shipped.

m17s/p14s were/are wonderful - if heavy - military rifles. i sure wouldn't mess with a complete mil-surp one now, but years ago i had a good eddystone p14 that made into a fantastic sporter. boy, but it took a lot of work ... you go get 'em with yer .416. it's YOUR rifle ...
