I'm considering a new varmint rig and I'm thinking about the Weatherby Mark V Varmintmaster is 243 Winchester. Anyone own one of these and care to comment on it?

I had one I traded for a Howa 1500 with the heavy barrel and I am glad I did. The howa other than a trigger is shooting in the .2s to .5s with everything I put down her. The weatherby was ok but not the shooter I was looking for. Great feeling rifle but just wouldn't shoot with the 243 Howa. HAPPY HUNTING

I had one of the made in Saul back in the 60's in 224 and it was the most beautiful rifles I had ever seen. Made a move from Rockford, Ill. to Loveland, Co. and it helped pay the way. It is probably the one rifle that I have sold that really would like to have back.

I am also considering the Sako 85 Varmint rig.
Both have flutted barrels, the Weatherby is 26" long and the Sako is 24" long. Both come in 243 Winchester which I am equipped to handload. I've been able to attain great accuracy with my handloads on the other center fire rifles I shoot.
I posed the same questions on some other threads and it seems I'm getting mixed reviews about the gun.

A friend has the Weatherby in 223 that shoots very well. I'm not a Weatherby man myself so I'd lean toward the Sako if picking between the two. Not sure who offers the 243 in this configuration, but I'd check Savage, Ruger, Howa and Remington, Ruger being my fav.

I have the SuperVarmint master in 223, not 243. The rifle shoots very well and I would certainly recommend them, at least in 223.

Tom

I have an older Mk V Varmintmaster ... it has a wood stock and is the best shooting rifle I own.
