We have made a mod to the 700 bolt stop spring.
Actually it is a step back in time. we have set up a 700 like the old 721 by replacing that weak nasty stop spring with a coil spring.

We drill a hole to seat the spring in the bolt stop slot and cut a small notch in the bolt stop.
Put a coil spring in and we are done.
Testing so far shows that it is much more reliable than the factory 700 set up. It has much more upward force on bolt stop, but is still plenty easy to make it release the bolt.
The picture shown is on the test rifle. An old 700 action we have cut oin and all sorts of stuff.
It is Clay's hunting rifle right now.

What do you all think? We are thinking about putting in all of our hard use rifles we build at no extra cost, and just doing the conversion for $30.00 plus shipping. Yeah or Neah?

Thanks Celt

I've never failed one,but if bent on an upgrade I'd opt the Ruger-esque option or the smaller plunger. Both are affixed upon the receiver's side and that may cause issues for some folks.

Had my XP-100(old style solid bottomed receiver) done up with the plunger,as they have zero provision for an external bolt release mechanism and it were both cheap, easy and bulletproof.

IF inclined to upgrade,it would be to bypass the issue sheetmetal linkage and go external, where all could be easily dealt with hastily.

Brownell's offers several version of the theme.....................

Thanks! Keep the comments coming. That is what I need!
I am always looking to make our rifles more bullet proof.

I don;t know if it's possible or feasible, but I'd like to see someone do a Sako or Montana Rifle type release on a Remington. I've got both and they are pretty slick.

This is the type I'm talking about:

I've never much liked the 700 set-up at all and Ol' Paul still had the best system, IMO... but for a quick, easy and slick way to get rid of that goofy piano wire; I like it!

I played once with a push button working on a lever on a 98 mauser to replace missing parts... but patching the holes in the action was not included...
