Anyone used any of the steel jacketed bullets from Hornady yet? It appears that it is an effort to duplicate the old .416 Rigby 410gr steel jacketed bullet that was famous for penetration. They have them in .458 as well in a couple of weights. Thinking of oerdering some .416 and .458s. reflex264

I fired a few 500 grain .458 solids out of my .458 Winchester. They shot well. 74 grains of H-335 and a F-215 cap. A good crimp so hold everything in place and to abet feeding. A flange at the case mouth does not help you.

The old 416's, at least those I've seen photos of, were blunt nosed, but not flat nosed.

The Hornidays are a bit short of meplat, or flat nose, but seem a good compromise for "general use" bullets that need to feed.

I used the old-style (steel) 410gr/416 Rigby Hornadys on Buffalo as a finisher. Shot him at point-blank range between the withers. Went clean through and into the Zimbabwean dirt. Two 400gr Swift A Frames started the festivities. First one took the front leg & heart out & the second went through the lungs. jorge

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

They look pretty good just from the pics. My guess is that they are a honest attempt to re-create the 410gr steel jacket bullet but with the modern nose.

jorge, was that a Kynoch factory load of a hand load using the old bullets? reflex264

Tried to find a source for the new 376 bullet listed on website w/o success. Send Hornady an email & never received an answer. I can only conclude they are not yet available.

I just loaded some up in 480 gr. (softs)in 458 in my 450 NE and will be taking them to the range this next weekend. Have been using woodleighs which my rifle is regulated for. From looking at both types of bullets I feel they should shoot to the same point of aim. The Hornady just appears to have the lead cut flat instead of remaining rounded like the woodleigh.

I keep seeing references to old Kynoch bullets, but the old Kynochs were not that sturdy.

What I have read and seen pictures of only the .416 Rigby bullet was built like a battleship. Steel jacket with a bulk head up front. Prety imposing. reflex264
