Most modern semi-auto and slide action shotguns and rifles can't be closed uncocked either. I've never cared for this.

If its loaded I don't see the point. If its not loaded I don't see the problem.

Look at the inner radius of a pre lever versus the inner radius of a tang safety 99 lever and the difference is obvious. M. L. Mcpherson covers the how to change it thoroughly in his Accurizing The Factory Rifle. I've been tempted to try with a couple DL's we hunt frequently--I really like the slip-close on the oldies--but so far haven't put a Dremel to a lever. dh

RE: the point and the problem--I like slip closing when a rifle is cased for travel in a vehicle. A blush experience w/ a Win88 some years back taught me that uncocked is a very good thing, at times. smile dh

It doesn't take a whole lot to get it to slip by. I bought one that had been reworked but have never done one myself. Just not a real big deal to me.

Interesting. Sounds however like gunsmithing to me, right? and not kitchen table work for an amateur?

Do you have any suggestion how to remedy the lever disconnecting from the bolt? Guess this also requires some professinal work?

I've never seen a lever disconnect from the bolt unless the bolt stop was missing. That's a pretty blatant flaw but easy to fix.

Milling out the lever to slide past the trigger is pretty simple stuff if you are mechanically inclined.

Lightfoot has just told you as much as I know about it. Unless the bolt stop is missing I can't imagine a 99 action sloppy enough to allow the bolt to come loose from the lever. I don't know as I'd give up on the rifle since I'd imagine that they're somewhat hard to come by where you are. A M99 is a fine hunting rifle and I'd be willing to bet that you'll have a hard time replacing it for what it would cost you to make it right. It may take a bit of tweeking but you should end up with a great shooter in the end. If you're the least bit mechanically inclined download an exploded diagram and then remove the buttstock and have a look at the action just to familiarize yourself with it. It is probably one of the simplest repeating rifle actions in existence.
