Let's see if I've learned anything.Serial #5318xx.LBC 26A. This would make this a 1949 EG ?See pics. What barrel twist would this have? What size bullet would perform best with this barrel twist ?Was $550 too much to pay(no extra holes or tang crack.I beleive it's all original.Thanks.

I got 1950 for that number. I think 1949 (or 1950) was after the 1-14" twist barrels were changed. Someone will probably correct me but I think that should have a 1-10" twist.
My rifle (with the 1-14" twist) likes the 100 grain bullets better than the 87 grainers, so who knows what weight yours will like.
I would say you didn't do too bad with that deal...most people around here won't part with their 250 for less than a grand, and they are often in a lot worse shape.

For a 250-3000 I'm going to go out on a limb here. You did good. If you feel otherwise, I'll be glad to take it off your hands for even samoles. Jerry

Nice rifle Red. Try the 87 and 100 grainers and see what shoots best. I think Savage was still using the 14 inch twist but not sure.

Red,
You are gonna have to reload to get 87 grain cartridges without spending collector money on cartridges. It's pretty easy finding 87 grain 25's at gun shows in my area, full and partial boxes. Cheap bullets compared to new.

I've been thinking that too Steve99.After the sticker shock of the last couple of boxes of 22hp I picked up.I got Lillier&Bellot 70 grainers for $35 a box.I grabbed the last of them, even though I've never heard of them. They had some Norma left but at $70 a box,a little rich for me.The 250 ammo I'm getting for $32 a box and while a little easier to find still pretty pricey considering I get 30-06 for $18.So reloading is definately on my radar.I've been saving my brass from all my rifles so I'll have no shortage of that.

Barrel twist is 1-14. Didn't go to 1-10 until ~1960.

Even in Canada the 250s cost more than your average tomato stake. You did alright, it's a great caliber. Reloading is a great option for that cartridge. You may find that both 75 gr. & 87 gr. bullets out perform the 100 gr ammo for accuracy. A Stith mounted scope or a good receiver sight might also bring that rifle into it's own. ENJOY!

Nice rifle. I picked up a 99 R in 250 savage yesterday in about same condition and it cost me quite a bit more especially after taxes. It has a Redfield 70LH receiver sight which is good but does have two holes in wood for swivel studs. Mine is very close to yours in number 5393XX and has lever boss code 25A which is also 1949. This R hasn't been tapped for a scope. If you find a great load let us know! BillR
