I didn't expect to buy a rifle today, in fact, I was kind of hoping not to run into one I couldn't resist... like this one. 1927 vintage Winchester Model 54, 30-06. Reblued, new stock, bolt handle altered at some point, safety isn't factory but it came with a scope and the factory stock. Very slick little rig, I'm going to set it up with a receiver sight and take it "good weather" hunting. Should be fun. grin

That is a very nice find. With all that drop at the heel, it should be perfect for irons.

Very nice, indeed. Congratulations. Basically, this is Winchester's take on the German Mauser 98. Of course, the Model 70 was a refinement of that design, and has some advantages over it. Perhaps the last time in Winchester history when substituting one design for another was actually an improvement of the product on all levels. That said, the Model 54 is a superb rifle. Essentially a piece handmade by skilled craftsmen, unlike the mass produced junk they put out today. Happy hunting. Nice find.

I'm sure my pre-64 Model 70's are making fun of their older brother in the safe right now... grin

Both that's a darn nice find. Do you think that recoil pad is original?

Original to the last owner grin The factory stock would have had a checkered steel buttplate, this Pachmayr pad looks to be a 60s or 70s vintage.

Damn.....

Makes me remember the one I missed. Model 54, 4 digit serial number (12xx), uncut, unphucked, and about 90% condition. Proper Lyman receiver sight, with insert still intact. .270WCF. It walked out the door of a shop that I was FLYING back to in order to get it, about 5 minutes before I got there. $400, out the door.....

I remember you telling that story. Don't you hate when that happens? Happened to me at least twice before.

Congrats on your find! I think your safety is original factory
but Im not an expert on 54s. A friend of mine looked at a
54 in 250-3000 awhile back, but passed on it because it was
drilled and tapped on the side and bolt handle was welded
for scope use. The guy wanted 800 if I remember correctly.
I have seen a couple of 54s in 30-30 that have been rechambered
to 30-40 Krag, but I never have the money when I find them.

thats a clean 54.
i picked this one up at the local pawnshop. it was made in 1926, its in -06, & was drilled for a sidemount at one time.
the stock has more streaking in it than any of the others i've seen so far.

The stock is a custom job, likely turned from a factory pattern stock. The factory stock that came with the gun looks alot like yours: straight grained, strong walnut.

I took that picture during a "clear interlude" here in Oregon, it started hailing about ten minutes later, then it snowed a bit, then it was sunny again... grin
