Beautiful bull.
Without disclosing your "spot" - within a hundred miles or two, where did you shoot him?
Also, what was the make of the 190 grain bullet?

Thanks. That bull would have been too close to call had I been guiding and would actually not quite have been legal for any but residents of the unit: 22A, where he was killed. He was just a fraction shy of 50" and lacked the needed brow tines, but he was okay for an "any bull" hunter.
Yep, it was a Hornady job.

The 06 is just a good balance in every aspect. Re: rifles, bullets, velocity, brass availability, powders, powder capacity accuracy potential....you get the gist.

I've got a couple -06s. One spits .277 bullets, the other .338s. No question that the .308 version would do anything these would, but damn, what fun is that?

Hard to imagine a better all-around cartridge for 99% of the hunting done in the US.
Got my second one yesterday.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

What's wrong with the .30-06? It's hard to turn a rifle down if that's the chambering, the reason I just bought my 6th. (That is, .30-06's I own now, not lifetime total.) This one's a pre-WWII Model 70 Winchester, used just enough that I don't have to worry about another tiny hunting ding or two, complete with the nicest Lyman Alaskan I've ever seen outside of mint-in-the-box. I might just use this rifle for all my big game this fall, with old-time bullets as well (you know: no bonding, partitions, plastic tips, or "monolithic constuction").

I can't take credit for the shooting, just loading the ammo. My Ol' Pappy (POPBEAR hear at the Campfire) was the trigger monkey for those targets.

Sorry, I don't post photos on the Campfire. If I did, I'd spend all my time posting photos on the Campfire!

JB: The pre-war sounds sweet!.....but how are you gonna hit anything with that l'il old 2.5 power scope? I picked up one this winter; not a pre-war, but a standard made in 1961,and used it as a test-bed to play with the B&C reticle. Both seem to work just fine.Good luck with your "new" rifle.

The nice pre-war's are really nice...........is it the cloverleaf tang model? MM

While I will probably continue squander untold wealth on rifles in other calibers there is certainly no need. Indeed, if it can't be killed by my 30-06 with some type of Nosler Partition I should probably run from it.

Yeah, it's the cloverleaf tang. A nice old rifle! I did some light gunsmithing on it over the weekend, finding that (like a lot of old Model 70's) apparently the factory trigger pull had never been adjusted. It took about 10 minutes to get it down from 4-3/4 pounds to a little over 3. Might just shoot old ammo in it as well. I've got a pile of "classic" .30-06 loads lying around....

John,
How about sending it to me, and I'll do a "pre-war vs. post war" shoot out? I'll write a freelance article on it and send it to you. Then you can do a "How I started another day dreamer on a career of gun writing...." article.
Not enough? How about "I hunted elk with John's Prewar model 70?" or "30-06 - it would have been enough, if I had seen any elk" or "hunting wolves where once there were plenty of elk with the 30-06"
I willing to work with you on a theme.....

Hey, what a great idea! I mean about the pre- versus post-war shootout. I also happen to have a post-war, pre-'64 .30-06 and can do that one myself.
I'll send you a percentage of the article check, if my wife will let me.

That is a great idea, I would read that article for sure. I am sure it would be more definitive with a couple of examples of each rifle.
