If you have a .22-250, you'll not find much if anything better.... but if you want/need more, the .25-06 would be the FIRST one that came to mind.

If it were me, I'd load 52 gr. A-maxes and 53 gr. TSXs in the .22-250, 100 gr. NBTs and TSXs in the .25-06, and not fret having the best or enough for anything up to really big nasty schit.

I shoot mostly the 243 now. I used to use the 250s alot but the knockdown power of the 243s are much better and the 243 with a 55gr BTs is a yote hammer. HAPPY HUNTING

I like the .243, they're pure poison on coyotes. I prefer 70 - 87 grain bullets. They hammer coyotes!

The 223 is all the coyote gun I need. It will do the job out 350 yards easy and still puts one hell of a hole in em. Its cheap to shoot low recoil and definitely not as loud. If your talking longer range I plan on building a 22-6mm for geting out there a little farther but the 223 has and probably will remain my goto gun. A 40gr Vmax pushed over 4000fps with 24gr of Viht N120, what more do you need.

I just rolled a yote with a 36 gr varmint grenade out of the 250. He was running at about 160 yards or so and rolled at the shot. He then got up and sprinted about 40 yards and then staggered and fell. I wasn't able to recover the yote, but based on the performance that bullet was giving on gophers that morning, I'm sure it just liquified his insides. I have yet to try this, but I would like to see what the 62 gr varmint grenade does from my .243. smile

Ive pretty much lived a life of coyote hunting,Ive put most of my focus in life on coyote hunting and rifles propper for doin it,Ive been shooting and loading ammo since I was in 6th grade and Im getting to be a member of the ol farts club here pretty rapidly, maybe Im just havin a brain fart at the moment because Ive shot a lot of coyotes down thru the years with a 223 remington and a 40 gr. ballistic tip,and I dont ever recall my muzzel velocity being anywhere near 4000 FPS,I could take my ol trusty 22-250 with the same 40 gr. BT and probably drive it up to or just over 4000 fps but I dont believe the 223 will ever get there,i used to to tell people years ago that coyote huntin and 22=250s went together like apple pie & ice cream. One hell of a coyote rifle they are no doubt,5 years back I started messin round with an ol ruger 77 in 243 win. with 85 gr. bullets that just drills em,no struggle no suffer,Bang your dead............

I think your the 242 is your best choice and as far as the 223 getting to 4000 fps I can tell you firsthand I have chonographed one doing it.I carry my old outdated 220 swift for yotes it kills them graveyard dead. I just spent a lot of time going through this. My feeling was this, lots of them work and probaly very litte "real life" difference. I don't care if I am overgunned at less than 300 yds but wanted everything I needed if chance arose at longer distances. I have 204, 222, 22-250, 25/284, 25/06. They all work great but I wanted one that was just my dedicated yote rifle. Came down to two, 22.250 with 55grn or .243 with 55-70grns. After studying ballistic charts came down to the .243 with 70 grn. At 500 yds the same velocity as 22.250 with 55grns but more engry. I feel it is perfect. The only thing better would be .243 Imp or 6/284.

I just went over to the shop and checked the nosler manual, with a 40 gr. bullet the 22-250 just barley gets to 4000 FPS and the 223 Rem with 40 gr. bullets delivers 3600 to 3700 fps,Ive reached a point in my life that I dont need to kill just to prove that I can,I give all the coyotes I shoot to an ol gent who skins and stretches em and sells em to for someone to get some use from them, most every coyote I ever shoot with 85 gr sierra BTHP from the 243 has a pinhole on entry and never exits, therefore doesnt require 3 lbs of thread and 2 hours to sew back together,God bless and good day......

Man that's a sew job, and really wouldn't be much fun skinning either. Have sewn some up like that tho.

243 if your shooting longer 200+ is my pref.

223 or 22-250 is fine as well.

My preference has almost always been an AR15 carbine with a flat-top upper wearing a quality 2-7x scope. I usually run a 60 grain V-Max over a stiff charge of 748. Using a semi-auto on song dogs is just so pollitically incorrect that you just HAVE to do it. The first time you call in a double or tripple when you've got an AR handy is just plain fun smile

If I know that they are going to come in way out there and hang up. I'll take my model 7 in 260 loaded with 140 Sierra Matchkings at 2750 FPS. That rifle and me can reach WAAAAAY out there on dogs.

Also, I use a shotgun a lot.

whatever is handy grin up here they are a target off opportunity though ive been thinking about specifically targeting them.......but even out here on the prairie ive prolly killed more of them with whatever shotgun i had handy while bird hunting cause i ran into more stupid coyotes the first few weeks of bird season than any other time....my deer/elk/speed goat rifles have also taken their fair share due to the fact i see lots of yotes while deer hunting, especially driving between the points i like to walk.....almost had one with the 375WSM 2 years ago but the SOB threw on the brakes to look back the same time i took up the last lil bit of the trigger, a buddy who was watching through binocs said i parted the bastards hair on the top of its head grin as for the ideal coyote round? prolly a 22-250 or 243......

Rattler, next time I head over that way on a varmint Jihaad I'll send you an e-mail or PM. If we can hook up, I'd be glad to show you some of the tricks of the trade. Not that I'm a PhD in coyotology or anything, but I've called and shot a lot of dogs.

That area has got to hold more song-dogs per-capita than anywhere else in the state. Last time we were over there they were getting the mange really bad.
