The wind is blowing and the wild hair got bent the right direction. Just put a DPMS .243 on layaway with Trijicon 1.25x4x24 scope. Ought to be the cat's hind quarters for coyotes and plinking. My question regards reloading for .243 in an AR type rifle. Are there any special concerns other than full length resizing? I understand small base dies may be required depending on chamber dimensions. Any favorite powders? My current go-to load for yotes is a a Speer 70 grn TNT bullet atop Varget powder in Winchester Brass and Federal primers. Should I go with another powder when shooting a gas operated auto?
This is my first time reloading for a semi-auto although I reload for a dozen and more bolt and single shot rifles. Ya learn something new every day.

Welcome aboard BullGoose. I haven't loaded for any AR's other than .223's, but Varget works well in those. You shouldn't need small base dies. Sometimes you'll be advised to crimp all loads for AR's. I don't and I've never had a problem in quite a few years of admittedly limited experience. I would guess that before long you'll hear from rost495 on these issues. He is, IMHO, one of the guys on this forum whose advice regarding AR's you can take to the bank.

BullGoose - It slipped my mind that we were on the reloading forum. If I were you I would post this on the AR-15 forum. If you do you'll soon hear from rost495 and a couple other guys who have BTDT.

Naw, Bullgoose. On an AR type gun in 243 you don't have any worries. M1A's are a little different, they can be picky about powders as too much pressure too late can bend an op-rod. AR's don't care. Small base dies aren't needed. Only RCBS makes them, because their run of the mill 2 dies sets are generous on dimensions (in the name of better accuracy) All other dies sets out there are "small base" in the first place.
Get ready to have some serious fun with that rifle...
If it were me, I'd buy it in a 260. Then it could double as a serious "tactical" gun with 140 Sierras. 95 grain V-maxs at 3000 FPS do some serious carnage on varmints as well.
I'm Irish...
Of course I know how to patch drywall
