I don't have any kids, except for my two dogs. No wife or girlfriend to take care of, either. And as long as I have something to eat, my dogs will eat, too. And if I was on the verge of starvation, I'd take one of those guns and go kill something. With all the government programs, soup kitchens, and charities in existence in this era, you'd have to work pretty hard to starve. More than once I've seen vagrants deliberately break a law and then stand around waiting for somebody to come arrest them so that they can go to jail and either eat or get out of the cold. I understand y'alls point, but I'm still keeping my 'keepers'. Everyone is free to disagree and behave differently if they are so inclined.

One point to consider- or at least I certainly have- is the impact on the family from the expense of the guns... it's real easy to spend $1000 on a rifle/scope that we don't even really need. What would that $1000 do for the family?
I have made my mistakes in that regard, no doubt.

Nope, can't imagine a single item I own that I wouldn't sell if it meant keeping my family out of the poor house, or to help my kid. That's the definition of family guns.
After all, guns are just 'stuff', family ain't. not having a gun is too poor for me or family imo. I get your point. and while I have some family heirlooms (prolly no real value to them other than sentimental) that I hope I never sell. I'd have to keep a couple around, at least a couple of rifles (one bolt and one lever) and a shotgun it'd be my luck to sell my last gun to buy a hog to feed the family and then the hog rustlers would show up! I figure on being able to do something besides throw rocks at em. YMMV

Taking out Steelheads objections, I have a Wingmaster 12 gauge that my father gave me; a .30-06 on an old Mauser action that belonged to my grandfather, and both will stay long after I sell everything else of value I have.
Stuff is stuff, but I have an afghan that my grandmother made for me, that I pick up at times and remember what a blessing she was in my life.
I have a few other things, like the afghan, that are only material things of course, but they sure bring back a flood of memories of beloved people, places and times.
I'm glad I have them and don't have to live in a sterile environment void of any family keepsakes!

There's not a gun in my collection that I want to sell right now (I bought each one 'cause I wanted it), but I've got several that I would never sell. I could take up additional jobs or sell off other stuff if things ever got tight, so I can safely say I'd NEVER sell certain guns.

I built up my gun "collection" during a time of my life where income was stable, if not large, and our paid-off house and property allowed me to indulge myself...
Now the wifey is talking about building a new house and so not only am I likely done buying guns for a while, but I've been looking them over (about 20 or so) and deciding which ones are the "nut" of my collection and what is extra and can go if need be.
They are just "stuff" but there's a few of them that are pretty dang necessary stuff... at least if I intend to hunt, and be able to defend my rural property etc.

That's pretty much where I'm at too, 'cept for a custom build that's already in the works. Right now any extra gun money is going to powder, bullets, and .22LR ammo.

I'm at the stage of my life where I'd rather have fewer but nicer "stuff". As a result, nearly everything I own has either been sold, traded, or is for sale. Hopefully it is being sold to someone who will use and appreciate it.
With the proceeds of selling off my "stuff", I'm taking my sons and father hunting. As others have said so much better than I can, stuff really means nothing. Right now, the memories mean a lot more to me.

I've owned well over 100 Model 70s since 1978; over 80 Remington 700s since 1972, and those numbers don't include Mausers, Weatherby Mark Vs, Rugers, Sakos, etc.
Almost all of it was sold or traded-off a long time ago, and now I'm down to 8 Model 70 custom jobs that form the core of my hunting battery, plus my original Rem. 700 '06 that I bought in '72.
I'm stick of more new and different rifles, but I don't get sick of hunting with the ones I have. Those I'd like to keep for the rest of my life, but if I ever had to sell guns off to pay bills, I'll keep my favorite Model 70 custom 338 Win. Mag. plus my Model 700 30-06 and sell all the rest of them..........

This is a perplexing question. I might have one or two I would sell, but what does person do with his rifles/shotguns/ handguns when he can no longer hunt or use them. Sooner or later, we all get to that point. In my case, my son, nor grandson does not hunt or even have interset in them. I am not about to give them to a son in law who might or might not be a family member in years to come. Some are family hierlooms passed down to me, some are firearms that I myself purchased 40 years ago. I would hate to leave them to someone who ends up just seling them off.

If your son isn't ANTI gun he might like them just as reminders of his father?

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Well, sure. That get's into the territory like in the movie where the the guy pimps his wife for the right price! What was it, a million bucks? This was some hollywood movie, not some scuzzy 23-minute jobbie <g>.
Point is, just about EVERYTHING is for sale.. at the right price.
How about for sale at market value, though?

I have a few that I will never sale, three given to me by my father and one given to me by my wife. They will all get passed down to my son and my daughter. If a gun is a gift it stays, if I buy it from someone or a shop then it can go. Feel the same way about my Randall knife, it was a gift from my Officers and Soldiers when I retired from the Guard, it stays for keeps. Odessa

I have lost count on how many bolt action rifles I have had, somewhere between 30 or 40. But for the most part I experimented with them and played with reloading and tinkering etc., eventually getting rid of them.
However, all of this time I managed to keep the ones I have had succesful hunts with.
The main keeper has been a smooth actioned push feed M70 7mm Rem mag that I bought new in 1977. Also M70 .270 and 25-06. I would not want to sell these at anything close to market value.
Also, am partial to two very accurate 300 WSM's a Rem 700 SPS that shoots bearclaws and a Tikka T3 that shoots TSX. both of these have LimbSaver pads and are not unpleasant to shoot, (keepers)!
