Would you recommend renting and rv rather than a car to see Alaska? This would be my first rv rental and hear that the roads can be pretty dangerous?

When Ronald Reagan was president, we had Bob Hope and Johnny Cash.
Now that Barack Obama is president, we have NO hope and NO cash.

I did it 2 years ago, the roads were no issue, just be careful and watch your mirrors and speed. Rented from ABC motorhomes in Anchorage. Would do it again in a heart beat.

Alaska has great highways. Better than some in the lower 48. There are roads that receive little maintenance (Denali Highway, which is a gravel roadway) and the Dalton Highway. Rental companies often forbid driving on these "road" systems. Travel from Anchorage - Fairbanks- Denali Park - Valdez - Kenai - Soldotna - Homer are all excellent roadways.

I've never rented an rv, but looked into once. They are spendy to rent, and when you add in the high cost of fuel, will be spendy to run as well. I'd imagine you'd probably be at a wash staying at lodges or B&B's when you calculate in retal and fuel costs. While Alaskan roads can be driven in an RV, I'd much rather drive them in a car.

I'd much rather see tourists in cars than slow-moving aluminum slugs!

Had some family up a couple of years ago who rented an RV from Great Alaskan Holidays. They enjoyed it but spent just shy of $2000. Buy the extra insurance !!. It's amazing how those aluminum slugs get dinged. There were four in the RV so it was a little better cost wise for them, when the meals are factored into the equation, than staying in B&Bs or motels. We were able to wander around and tour and just pull off at night. We did use a few camp grounds but mostly found safe pull offs. It was their second time up renting RVs. With the current cost of fuel, you should plan on at least $500 more than they spent, depending on what you want to do. We spent very little at touristy things. I do recommend the paddle wheeler in Fairbanks as a fun thing, one of the touristy things we did.
