A buddy of mine recently asked me to dig up information on the "Accelerator" cartridge. If my memory is correct I believe that it was either a .30-06 or a .308 case that was loaded by Remington or Winchester with a .223 saboted bullet. He wanted to know the ballistics of the round and what powder was used to load it and the weight of the .223 bullet and sabot. I assume that any powder info is not available, but any suggestions as to what powder would duplicate factory ballistics would be helpful. Thanks in advance for any help.

Remington reported a muzzle velocity of 4,080 fps for the .30-06, 3,770 fps for the .308 and 3,400 fps for the .30-30. I've had a couple of boxes of 308's for a lot of years that I recently tried at the range. Three shots went into 1" with two touching. Not great but better than I expected, given the accuracy of these rounds was not reported as stellar. I have no idea on the powder used but would guess a ball powder. I have not pulled one to find out and don't plan on it.

Hey, have fun with those..... the plastic fouling in the rifling is fantastic for long-term accuracy.... not..... Oh, and it cleans out so very easily..... again, not.

I think they run about 55 grain and that is correct at around 4000 ft/sec. Now banned in Canada because no rifling grooves is left on bullet. They have been report to be able to go through both sides of a bullet proof vest at 400 yards. I still have some but I hear that some can be purchased under the counter-illegally.
No rifling marks on bullets is not well liked by law enforcement folk, since they can never prove what rifle it came from in court.

Under normal conditions, a 55grain sp bullet at 4000fps doesn't leave anything behind for comparison. The sabot will have rifling marks on it. I fell into six boxes of 30-06 accelerator last spring during reloading sell off a deceased frined's family member. I paid $5 per box.

I found that they were not very accurate and that is right on the sabot . I small piece of plastic like that would be difficult to find.

Have tried them in two different '06's one scattered them to 3" + the other an older Savage 110 would put 5 into 3/4" when I did my part and the barrel was kept clean (difficult to do with the plastic fouling already mentioned). My neighbors grandfather however used the 30-30 version in a 94 with a tang peep sight as his woodchuck rifle for years and rare was the chuck that got a second chance inside of 150yds.
Remington also used a primer with less force due to the lowered resistance of the sabot escaping the case neck at the start of the ignition sequence. The powder charge was 56 gr of fine granular powder simular to 4320 miniaturized. This is according to Ralph Lermayer in an article in COW #8.
