I've got a .300 Weatherby Mag with the 24" barrel I'd like to tame a bit, anyone have any experience with the coil check stock from A-Square? Do they work as well as advertised? Also since I don't believe A-Square sells just the stock, does anyone know where I can get a similarly designed stock?

John Ricks told me he doesn't like the coil check stock.

I had a 340 Wby on a 700 in an HS Precision stock. It transmitted a lot of recoil. I later had the rifle chambered into 338 RUM and put it in a McMillan "Sako Hunter" stock. The weigh for the RUM was a tad less than the 340, but the recoil of the RUM was much more manageable--even though the RUM held a lot more powder and shot 250 grain Partitions 150 fps faster.

However, for recoil reduction, it's hard to beat the Hogue stock with the full length aluminum bedding block. Cabela's has them for about $200. I have one on my 416 Rem, and it is very comfortable to shoot, even when the load generates 60 ft lbs of recoil.

As Blaine said, I have little regard for the Coil Check. It is a huge, heavy, cumbersome stock, the rifle is poorly balanced, and it feels like you are going to drop the rifle when you carry it. IMHO not desired features in a hunting rifle.

The rubber covered Hogue does soak up a lot of recoil. Blaine's 416 is a piece of cake to shoot in the Hogue, and a friend here has a 375 Ackley (A noted kicker) in a Hogue. Recoil is very easy.

If you buy the Hogue, be sure to order the one with the internal aluminum framework/bedding block.

Another option would be a McMillan, with one mercury recoil reducer epoxied in the butt, and a Pachmayr Triple Mag 990 recoil pad.

The best way to get used to the 300's recoil? Shoot some of the heavies, like 416 Rem, 458 Lott, 450 Dakota, etc. Then you will hardly notice the 300's recoil.
