I have a couple questions about this particular rifle. My local gunshop has one for sale for $750. It's a heavy-barrel varmint rifle in good/very good condition. I've always had a hardon for a Sako and was wondering if this is a good price? Also alittle nervous about brass availabilty in this chambering. He also has a Sako in .375 H&H for $600.....Need to makeup my mind on one before they go away......Thanks, Fishster

The Vixen is a wonderful rifle. Add to the price of the gun the cost to have the barrel set back and re-chambered to .223 if you want to shoot it a lot. Price is a good one, though. Great rifles!

I bought one last year in 222 Mag and I love it. I paid $700 for mine and all I can say is show me a new gun with that much steel today for that price and quality (assuming the throat is not gone).

I believe that is also the 12 land Bofors-steel barrel, as I don't think the mag duece was made after '71. They shoot silly.

Brass is not a problem. Yes, Remington quit making the brass this year, but as long as the 204 Ruger exists you will have brass. Reforming is as easy as running into the 222 Mag die.
You can even have a tight headspace adjusted to your gun on the first firing with new cases; the shoulder is pushed back and taper is added to the case. I have formed and used about 400 204 Ruger cases, W-W is best IMO.

You can also find some brass; I am sure it is not completely gone.

I have one in .222 and I love it, wouldn't give it up for anything. I don't think that's any runaway bargain but it's not bad. I've seen them for clear up to $1400 at gunshows. Ask if he'll sell it any cheaper, all he can do is say no.

I would jump on it and ask about putting th 375 on layway. Maybe score a package deal that way.

Now THERE is a great idea! BTW, I have two small action Sakos and yes, they are amazing shooters. I wish they were still making them.

Get the .222 Mag. Black Hills has brass for it @ $30.35/100 and that includes shipping. It's a great round, don't cobble up a great rifle...buy it!

Am thinking really hard about the >222 mag, as I have no real use for the >375. It does come with around 100 empty hulls and a box of loaded ammo. Thanks guys, believe I'll go for it....just needed a little arm-twisting......Fishster

I encounter the older Sako Vixens every now and then, usually
the 222RMs are almost always in mint condition and the 222Rs
are well used.

A friend of mine has one and loves it for shooting coyotes and badgers....real nice gun to shoot.

Old Sakos are very nice well made rifles IMO. Not a great price on the 222 Rem mag but it does seem like a fair price in the good/very good condition range.

The 375 ouch & ouch, well lets just say I would have bought that one on the spot for $600 if it was an older one in nice condition. Even though I already own a Sako in 375 ouch & ouch. Old Sakos are a soft spot for me.

What you have described is a "collecting gun". My graduate students and I collected a number of whitetails from Texas to Kansas using a Sako .222 Mag. All were shot over sand bags from the cab or the back of a pickup. Most were neck shots, but there were a few head and lung shots. Only lost one animal. If you PM me, I will tell you how many total we are talking about. I let that one get away from me (one of my former graduate students still has it and won't sell it back to me). Jump on it!
