I think marlins missing a sure sales bet by not producing a 50 alaskan version of thier 1895
look at it like this, the .50 cal allows lower pressures and heavier bullets than a 45/70s .458 bore, theres something about the BIG FIFTY that just instills confidence that your rifle got the power to get the job done, cast bullets will work fine! most game is shot under 150 yards anyway so trajectories not a huge factor, they should offer a deer load a 350 grain bullet at about 1600fps for those guys wanting lower recoil, and a BEAR load a 500 grain bullet at about 1800fps for those guys wanting a take no prisoners load to kick butt!

well??? would you BUY ONE? IF THEY MAKE THEM, I SURE WILL... especially in a full length rifle something similar to the 1895 cb but I bet guide guns would sell well also

why not marlin,unlike the 444 marlin all the components are available easily, the rifles have been previously built??? remington did it with the 35 whelen and 25-06 so why can,t marlin build a rifle that uses cartridges similar to the 50 alaskan
I seriously doubt it would take the marlin engineering staff long to rework the details!!! or the manufacturing guys a great deal of trouble to change the 1895 to handle the slightly larger cartridges. that 50 cal. bullet has a 19% larger bore and can easily have both more powder space in the cartridge with equal weight bullets and a faster drop on the pressure curve as the bullet move down the bore plus a greater area on the base of the bullet for the pressure to work against, plus a lower surface to weight

Me and 'ol Squatch will be test firing some of the 505 grain 50 Caliber bullets as soon as this Pacific NW Rain Forest weather lets up. The rain and dark overcast skys inhibit the M43 skyscreens!

Regardless, I'd happily take a lever gun you built against a Cape Buffalo. However, the 416 you built me works so well that I can't find any real justification to even think of using something else. Add to that the increased cost--double to triple to what the 416 cost me--and I once again talk myself out of such a rifle..............for now..........

The big levers are more fun than serious, but a 505 grain bullet at 5700 ft/lbs sure will get the attention of a big Brown Bear, Moose, or whatever stumbles through the camp at 2AM.

And, with the 450 grain bronze solid, would even be fun in Africa.

FWIW:

I understand that Wild West Guns is already doing the conversion of 1895 Marlins to the 500 Smith and Wesson. If I were to place a bet on the 50 caliber Marlin, I bet Marlin would choose this round. That's still gonna be one heck of a wallop to a Moose or a Brownie.

I sent Malin a letter in September requesting that they produce a 50 Alaskan, cited a bunch stuff, etc.

They responded with a letter in less then 2 weeks, basically saying "No, but thanks for the letter."

Oh well, I will keep trying.

NO, not 1700 but 2250 ft/sec. This is the beauty of a big case and long COL, gets the velocity at a reasonable pressure.

'Course we are not talking about just screwing a 50 cal barrel on the big M71 action. There is a lot more to it, not only to make the cartridge feed, but to enable proper recoil management for shootability and substantial modification of the rifle so it will stay together at the recoil levels of this load.

If you can handle a full house 500 grain 458 Lott Load, in an unbraked rifle, around 9-1/2 pounds, then shooting the big 50 lever guns is not bad.

After all, if you can see the teeth of that Brown Bear, you will never feel the recoil.
