If I am using Berkley Fireline, do I still need a steel/wire leader for Pickerel, Pike, and Musky?

I do just because when braid gets nicked on a rock or by something else, its strength drops alot. If a Pike gets his teeth into it, it wont be long before he is gone.

I don't like steel/wire: I would attach my bait hook or lure to a short length (16-18") of Fireline rated at several pounds stronger than my main line...join that to my main line with a blood knot...and change the "shock segment" regularly.

Super lines including FireLine are not known for there abrasion resistance. I would go with a steel leader when fishing toothy critters. If you are really concerned about the fish seeing the leader (which I don't believe is a problem) then go with a flourocarbon leader in the 100 - 150lb. range.

I tie my PowerPro to a quality barrel swivel and a flourocarbon leader off that.
