I think the weakest link can always be attributed to the operator.
One can hedge a bet with common sense and projectile selection, but swatting critters is well within the means of most offerings.
Personally,I think highly of the 243.....................

Well, you put a Sierra 70 gr. Match hollow point on top of IMR 4350 and shoot bug holes in paper or vaporize varmints. Then you do a 95 gr. Ballistic Tip on top of R 19 for whitetail deer and a 100 gr. Partition for anything larger. Anything you shoot with it dies provided you do your part and put the bullet in the right spot. I've only recovered one bullet from the 243, all the rest are still going. That's all I've ever need to know about the 243. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Gail Root, the designer of the 95 Ballistic was a real .243 Winchester freak. If mule deer, antelope or big elk needed killing, Gail used one gun and one bullet; the .243 WCF with the 95 Ballistic. He told me that he intended to use the bullet forever and if there was one "right" bullet in the world, it was the 95-grainer. The 70 Ballistic is a shoo-in. Perfect in every way for varmints and predators. Steve

I'm not a writer but found my .243 performed flawlessly with an 85 gr. Barnes. One shot kills on two black bears that literally knocked them off their feet. A mule deer double lunged that went about 50 yards. I have since sold the .243 and stepped up to a .284. Although the .243 did the job I always "felt" under gunned.

My father and I have used nothing but the 100 grain Hornady flat base spire points on big Utah mule deer for years. Last count was 33 mulies, some on the gagger side. We have only recovered a couple of them and they were perfectly mushroomed at about 49 grains. The recovered bullets hit a LOT of bone too. We use the same bullets for varmints as well. Flinch

My folks got 243's in 55 or 56. Those 2 model 70's accounted for every head of game they shot till their death. Dad's used a charge of 4350 over what you see published now days with the Hornady 100 gr bullet, Mom's featherweight used about the same amount of 4350 with the 100 gr nosler partition. What did they harvest? Antelope, deer ,elk, moose and bear. I used a 243 to take my first dozen elk, until I decide I was to grown up to use such a pipsqueek gun. Don't remember any of those elk needing more than 2 shots.
the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to. www.historicshooting.com
