Been a long while since I posted.
Snooping pawn shops today. Located an interesting Savage 311 SxS .410 series F.
In cherry condition. Has the orange tinted wood.
Impressed checkering(Deluxe model?).
ColorCase and blue close to 100%.
Wood finish looked factory. I'd guess about 95%. One small scratch on pistol grip. Screw heads minty/unturned.
Has a white line spacer under unmarked black plastic buttplate. One silver bead. Chokes out to about full and full but didn't get to take gun apart to check underlugs.
Bores mostly shiny but left barrel has light rust spotting in short portion of barrel.
Double trigger.
Looks like a late 1950's/early 1960's gun.
They want $220 out the door.
Should the Moonpie bite?

If you look on the WATER TABLE you should see some markings with either numbers or letters>>>The stock from your remarks may be HARDWOOD and stained to a CHERRY color<<<

Mooner...run, do not walk, back to the shop and buy that puppy! ANY Stevens .410 sxs will bring $400 - $650 in my part of the world, depending on age and model. Was at a gun show last weekend and didn't see one under $400. Glad mine's tucked in safe at home!

Welcome back to the Savage world. Check the 2003 hunt thread to see the deer I killed with your gun.

Well, I thought about it for a few hours, went and bought it. Nice little gun. Barrels are 26" long
right side of reciever marked:

STEVENS MOD. 311-series F
-----Savage Arms---------
Westfield, Mass. U.S.A.

left side of reciever marked w/ serial. A62XXXX

top of left barrel stamped:

Proof Tested .410 bore
----3 inch Chamber----

There is also a small oval with 5X inside the oval stamped on top of the left barrel.
The right barrel has the same oval with 7X in it.
I assume these are chokes?
Underlug of barrel is stamped w/ 2 circular proof like marks. One has an A other has a G inside of circles.
Large Y U stamped.
Also two ovals with SP inside located where barrel leaves the undelug block.

Water table of reciever has same large Y U and A and G inside circular proof like mark. There is another oval proof like mark with 12X inside of oval.
There is another stamp that I can't really make out. It sort of looks like a hammer or winged bird?
The metal retainer mechanism in the forearm is also stamped with the Y U and circular A and G.

Can any of you guys give me an idea of when it was made?
I figued it to be worth about $400.

Hey Lightfoot that is a nice deer. I see the mighty .284F took care of business. Tell me about the shot. Distance, bullet performance, etc. I really hated losing that ,284 because it shot great.

Glad you bought another Savage and it's one I've always had a warm spot for. Is that for your little girl? Sounds like you're riggin' her up for some dove shootin'?

The shot on the little buck was at 170 yards. 140 grain Remington PSPCL bullet with I4350, of course. He dropped in his tracks. Would have looked good on TV if I do say so! Right through the lungs and it was over in a breath. Dad would have been proud.

Moonpie,

Hey stranger... by the serial number, the gun was made in late 1970. The "X's" in the ovals are the year of inspection/testing, 1970.

I think I told someone that the coding only when to "V", 1968 but looks like "W", 1969 and "X", 1970 are there, also. Learn something new every day!

Maybe just the shotguns were?

We still haven't run into a 99 with them.

Thanks for the info guys.

Actually I don't think this would make a good choice for a kid. The stock seems long even for me. I'd really hate to cut it. Maybe if I could locate a cheapie replacement and cut it down.

Did I tell y'all I also got an older .410 bolt action tube feed?

Glad you got it; great little dove gun! I love smokin' blue rock with mine; turns a lot of heads when everybody else is shooting a 12! Every one I've ever seen was 26" barrels and full&full; anybody know if there were other configurations made?
