...hi john...

...i know that you are a big wing-shooting enthusiast...

...i have a rather silly question, but what is the proper way to hold a s-by-s double in terms of the position of the left hand (assuming a r-handed shooter)?...in the middle of the splinter?...at the front of the splinter?...or perhaps half on the splinter and half on the barrel (which seems to assist in obtaining an instinctive feel and rapid sight acquisition)...

...thanks for your thoughts...

The splinter on a side-by-side exists to hold the barrels onto the action. It was never designed to be solely gripped (do so and you'll look like Clair Reese). Place your hand wherever it's most comfortable, which means mostly holding barrels and avoid those barrel/hand protectors.

...thanks, 2-shots, for responding...

...i guess that is why i see so many left-gloved (on r-handed shooters) wing shots...i know what you mean about the hand protectors, i have a galco protector, and tried using it a few times, but it kept slipping off the barrels...

Those hand guards are good at removing bluing, too. I shoot clays and skeet with a glove that's chosen for the weather but when shooting flurries, a splinter grip is no fun. I've lately gone to a firefighter's Nomex glove for the left hand. Looks silly but eliminates the burns.

...thanks again, 2shots...

...for what it's worth, on a recent trip to canada on a wild geese hunt, i used le chameau's new 'wind-stopper' series shooting gloves (stocked by kevin's or stafford's or purchased directly through le chameau's us web site)...excellent shooting glove: very responsive feel (in addition to wind, rain and cold weather-proof), and made of a gore-tex-like technical fabric...

...cheers and good shooting...
