I average going to the range twice a week. Mostly I shoot pistol but occasionally break out a long gun or two, spotting scope etc and spend the day at the bench.

When the weather permits I shoot outdoors. Temperature is not a consideration but I don't shoot much in the rain any more.

I'd say I shoot 150 to 200 rounds of pistol ammo per week.

I was wondering how often the other shooters on this forum take time to pop caps (not beer caps, please.) And how many rounds they fire.

Thanks,

Norm

Hi Norm,

I go at least twice and many times three times a week. At least one trip per week is dedicated to my carry pistols and at least 100 rounds per. I have also been doing the rimfires and bench shooting the other trips, it is one of the few real pleasures I have remaing and thanks to a really nice WMA range just 10 minutes froom the house and decent weather most of the time I get to do it.

this has the makings of an interesting thread; i have been wondering the same thing. for many years now, i have shot what i consider to be more than the average shooter. oh, nothing like the top guns in the action pistol games but plenty none the less. started keeping records 3 or 4 years ago and though the numbers get spread around differently each year between rifle, shotgun, and handgun, the total volume is consistant at 20,000 rounds per year. so far this calender year, it breaks down like this: rifle, 2066; shotgun, 3589; pistol, 14644. total rounds fired, 20299. total shooting sessions to date, 240. in the coming year, i expect shotgun to be up and rifle to be way up because of some new toys acquired recently. of course, this means that pistol will be down. but when all the dust settles and the smoke clears at the end of 2004, i'll have gone through another 20,000 rounds of something.

Well, I don't keep records like RipSnort, but my shooting partner and I go for about a dozen all day sessions per year (he lives in central CO and I in central WY). These sessions entail anywhere from 5 or 6 firearms to as many as 40 or more and sometimes includes full auto. Any one session will see at least a brick (500 rounds) of rimfire, and if full auto is not used, another 1000 rounds minimum of various cal's. . Last month we had 2 .17Rem arms, 3 .22Hornets, 1 .222, 6 .223 (including 2 AR-15's and a bushmaster) 2 .243's, 2 .250Sav, 1 .260, 2 7.62-39 (both AR-15's), 1 7.62-54R, 2 .358's, 1 .44mag, 2 .45-70 (Marlins) and 1 .458mag.--that is just the long guns (I may have left some out). There were at least a dozen handguns--wheels, semi's, a striker, and a TC tinker-toy (with 5 or 6 barrels)ranging in cal from .22rf to 45-70 (2-BFR's) and .454 Casull. We put at least 10 rounds thru each gun (except the .458--2 rounds each, which was more than enough fun), went thru over half a 1200 round case of 7.62-39 steel-cased,5 or 6 hundred rounds of .223, 6 or 7 boxes of 9mmpara, 100 rounds each of .256WM, .357Sig, .357Mag, .44Mag, and .45-70, and 20-25 rounds of .454 plus 2 bricks of .22rf. On the occasions when we break out the full auto's--we can go thru 2000 rounds real fast (we try to keep the FA's food supply down). We both travel extensively--I only in Wy. and he in both states, and when we have a chance, like last week, we get together for more 'on the road' fun. Last week he had a new (to him) .357sig and THE new .500 S&W and a couple other untried guns; I had my .357 Ruger security six 'truck gun', 2 winchester M 71's and a contender in .22 Hornet. We fired 50 sigs, 50 .357mag, 22 .500S&W, 31 .22Hrn, he probably put 100 thru his other two handguns (a .45 and a 9mm I think) while I shot 20 rounds apiece thru the M 71's. My wife and I will go out several times a year and quite often I will break up a long drive with a little .357 practice. Not counting the full auto's, I'll guess at somewhere between 15000 and 20000 rounds a year. We never shoot at established ranges--Wyoming is kind of one

BIG range! Steve

Doug,

Sounds like a great day shooting. But you must get out more often.

It's been raining for two days and I took the live flu vaccine up the nose yesterday and don't feel all that hot and I still am half tempted to go to the range and muck about in the mud and shoot in the rain.

Well since the range I go to is right out the back door (my own 6 covered bench, 500yd, with 3 that have target chains to 300yds) I shoot lots just about every day. I like to unwind from my nightshift with a 100 rounds, every one down range carries a bit of the crap from work with it. Have some friends over most weekends I don't work to shoot, have some gumbo or chicken and rice, bread pudding and a warm fire, mostly shooters that want to shoot my Contenders or their new stuff on a more formal range then out the back door.

Doug - It's tragic how many perfectly good hunts get put off due to work! Is there no justice?

Crawfish - You brought back memories of the days when I shot crows (before they became protected, of course) by opening my sliding glass door and shooting from the dining room.

Dang this city living. Fortunately I belong to several clubs the nearest of which is only 5 minutes from the house.

Thanks for the comment.

It sure is a hoot to hunt out the back door. Did three rimfire projects last summer for squirrel. I have 7 pecan trees in the yard sooooo I sit on the deck with my iced tea and pot them pecan stealing bandits. This past Tuesday I used the Savage 17HMR to thin them out a bit. Had 8 on the ground and a bunch still in the trees when the wife drove into the driveway. Guess they will have to wait for our Christmas morning squirrel hunt. We'll hunt in the pecan grove though not in the yard.

Went out yesterday--9 guns including the 16--all were .223's My wife went with; also two very young friends (8 and 10) who had never shot before. We finished off the last 700 rounds of an open case and went through a new 1000-round case. My wife shot maybe 3-400 rounds. She particularly liked a Savage 340 but didn't mind a nice little Rem 788. The young one's mission (since it was their first time) was to watch range etiquette, safety procedures, shooting and handling techniques and loading magazines. And, of course, chowing down on fried chicken and potato salad and fire-roasted hot dogs and 'mellows. They did get to 'help' shoot one mag each out of one of the 788's. I put 500 rounds through the 16 and the rest through various semi's, bolts, and single shots. We bundled up and watched the fire burn itself out after dark--all agreed it had been a very nice day. The most frequent question heard on the 20-mile trip back was 'When can we go with you guys again?' Steve

On a post like this a while back I noted the number of rifle, shotgun, and pistol primers I used in a year. I keep the empty primer boxes as an easy way to keep up with my records. Most here didn't seem to believe my numbers, so I ain't gonna post that again. But all my shooting is not done at the range. A good deal of it is in the field at varmints. I've knocked over a few jack rabbits lately with my .40 S&W Beretta 96. I gets plenty of practice an I'm a lookin for more.
