Joe (Mad Dog) is probably right... he usually is. However, with Savage Model 99s, the date of manufacture depends MORE on the Lever Boss Code ("LBC") than on the serial number... and both 1952 and 1953 Model 99s have the "666xxx" serial number series in them. The numbers and letter in the brackets are the LBC's. (see below) D= 1952: 621686(3D), 625775(19D). 638145(3D), 643122, 655689, 6693xx, 6726xx, 673018(27D)
E= 1953: 6664XX (19E), 694,7XX(19E) 699XXX(19E), 709xxx(3E-my rifle), 8351xx(0E), The Lever Boss Code on your rifle is in a lightly and possibly a poorly embossed OVAL on the lower front side of the lever boss, the extention into which the lever rotates. The first character will be the Inspector's number, the second letter after the number indicates the year of manufacture beginning with the letter "A" in 1949, the letter "B" in 1950, the letter "C" in 1951 and so on. To see it more easily, use a magnifying glass because the letters and numbers of the Lever Boss Code are often indistinct and difficult to read accurately. Give us the LBC and we'll be able to tell whether it is of a 1952 or a 1953 manufacture. Strength & Honor... Ron T.

KS114, does the grip cap have one or two screws in it? I would like (PM works) to have another one or two digits from the serial number. The 666xxx range is at the end of the two screw period of use and your serial might help narrow the serial range more. There is a lot of overlap in the LPC's in your serial range. I would say your rifle was made late 1952 or early 1953.

I haven't been able to find the LPC number. The grips have 2 screws.

Not a big thing to worry about. You've got it narrowed down to a 4 or 5 month window now. If you're REALLY curious though, the LBC is almost always stamped on the receiver frame under the buttstock. So you could remove the buttstock and look for it there. Or just let it go and don't touch the screws.. always best if the screws don't get buggered. Being it's a 1952/1953, it's going to be either a 99EG or a 99R. The 99EG will have a schnabel forearm and probably not be factory d&t for a scope, the 99R will have a wide, rounded forearm and be factory d&t for a scope. Congrats on picking up a classic hunting rifle! Here's an example of my "LBC" stamp off of my 1952 99EG that's on the receiver under the stock. Sometimes hard to read on the front of the lever. 18D = 1952.

Thanks all who replied. From the sounds of things, I have a 99EG with a Williams peep sight. Thanks again!
