You'll enjoy it. My first few seasons were with a 99C in 284, and those guns work just fine.

I keep saying (kick me if you get tired of hearing it), some of the best deals in a hunting rifle can be found in the Savage 99. That's one great hunting rifle for not a ton of cash. Drop a fixed power Leupold scope on there and you're well under $1,000.00 for a world class hunting rifle.

Welcome to the fire. That's some nice wood. Have you been advised yet that, like potato chips, you can't have just one? I started with a post mil A in 308. Way past that now.
The fore end movement is normal.Before messing with the screw shoot it off of bags for accuracy checks with the receiver resting on the bags. Then rest it on the fore end and shoot. If nothing changes you're good to go.
