As long as it is a 24" barrelled LH bolt action sporting a AAA or better walnut stock and a Zeiss Conquest or Bushnell Elite 4200 I'm happy. Come to think of it a pre-warning 26" barrelled Ruger #1 with an AH forend and sporting the same scopes would be awfully nice too. Would it look something like this?

Wow that is tight. I have a Remy 700 BDL bought in 1964 w/4X Weaver in Redfield Jr mounts. Consistantly grouped 130/150 Hornady Interlock .5 to .75 at 100 meters. Just changed the scope last year to 3X9X40 Nikon. In all the years I have shot it has never letr me down.

I guess it would be, for me at least my 1975 model 700 bdl. It's been my go to rifle since I bought it at age 14. I shoot 57 grs. of H-4831 or 57 grs. of rl-22 with 150 gr. speer hot cor bullets.I have a 2X7 leupold scope on it.

That's some gorgeous wood!!
For me, it's the Rem 700 XCR with a Leupold VXII LR in Talley LWs....

Another vote for the Remington KS Mountain Rifle from the custom shop. Mine wears a 2.5x10x45 LPS and is fitted with a Jewell trigger.

Mine's just a plain SPS restocked with a Bansner, but it shoots well.

This pic is from the first day I hunted with my brand spanking new Browning A-Bolt .270 back in 1991. Before that I had grown up using a Savage in .270 and an old German reticle 4x Leupold. The new A-Bolt pictured was topped with a 2x7 compact Burris and stoked with 130 grain Noslers and H4831. It has continued to be a solid performer for me. I topped this day off by popping the heads off of 5 grouse with my trusty stainless Super Blackhawk .44 while waiting for my dad to bring the pickup back to where I came out to the road. All in all it was a pretty good day.

Theoretically, it's a pre-64 M70 FW (which I have and it's marvelous). However, for me the perfect .270 is a Rem700 wrapped in a Mcmillan Mt. Rifle stock topped with a Leupold Vari-XIII 3.5-10. It was a budding rifle loonies idea of the perfect all around deer rifle and it has never disappointed me.

Alan Day's has to be way up there.
I also like my Stainless Model 70 McMillan Fwt, with Gentry rings, and Leupy 6x42 FXIII with Dots.

These days the two that travel and get hunted are a pre 64 M70 FW made around 1955-56.It wears an older M8 4X Leupold in DD mounts and dotes on a load of 61-H4831 with the 130 screw machine Nosler Partition, of which I have a hoarded supply.Velocity is around 3125.This rifle is very stable and reliable for a wood stocked rifle, which is why it goes hunting.
The other started out as an original M70 FW that was restocked in a Brown Precision Pounder;3 years ago I finally killed the barrel and it now has a #1 Kreiger,22",and it shoots 60-RL 22-130 Partition or Bitterroot, or Aframe where I want them.It wears a newer 4X Leup in Leup mounts.Set up like this it weighs under 7 pounds, and is a very reliable, consistent rifle.
I guess that the "perfect" 270 is whichever one you have in your hands when you are hunting; the one that delivers for you in the field, and is built shot by shot, hunt by hunt, over a period of time as you and it run up a talley of successful memories and great hunts.THAT's perfection

Well, you take a really nice .270, most any will do, and ream and bore the thing out to take a .308 diameter bullet. Now the thing isn't as good on gophers, which is what the .270 does best, but will now shoot a 200 grain Partition, in case you run into an elk you don't just want to wound. Wayne

Wayne: I have 3 of those "reamed out 270's" you're talking about.... I found it an interesting concept and with a bit of gunwriter publicity, it could become pretty popular, too!

The "Perfect" 270 for me would be a pre-64 M70 Fwt in an ADL McMillan Edge or Bansner with a 6x36 leupold on top. Second choice would be the same M70 Fwt in SS.
If Kimber would make a LA version of their 84 in a Montana that'd be the ticket too...

I agree that Kimber should have put the 30-06 class in a long action 84M. As to the old .270 W. I lean towards Hagel, Page, and Bowman and I see the 7mm's as a better choice. I have a few .277's but only due to chance. Here is a Ruger Express with nice wood.

Beautiful Mulie!! So....was the disguise due to the belt buckle or the A-bolt?? HEY, in Montana a belt buckle like that is a legal form of personal identification!
