I bought a 7 mag at Wally World with a 26 inch tube. Mine is a Winchester Model 70. Shoots great.
I agree with Crow hunter and would not flute the barrel. For what it will run you, you would be better off with a custom barrel.
I personally have never seen a 26 inch Remington at Wally world. Doesn't mean they don't have them, just that I have never seen them in the store in my neighborhood. All the other Wally stores around my house quit selling firearms. I did recently buy a 243, Remington 700 with a 24 inch barrel.

Most of my guns have 26 inch tubes. The ones that don't will as I rebarrel them. My personal choice is 26 inches for everythig from 223 Rem to 300 win mag.

You bought the 7mm mag at least in part because it's a high velocity cartridge?

Try that 26" barrel. It just might please you... wink

I appreciate your opinions guys. I was hoping to get the gun down to around 7 1/2 lbs, preferably less. Thats why I wanted it fluted and cut down. Its gonna get cerakoted no matter what. I can have the barrel and bolt fluted from Kampfield for about $200. It will hopefully save about 5-6 oz. A Mcmillan edge should save a little more as well. I have no problem leaving the barrel at 26 inches, but don't think 50-100FPS is a big deal. However, an oz here and there will add up real quick. Thats another reason I was thinking about cutting it down. Im planning on using Talley light weights and running a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36 or 3.5-10X40 with a B&C reticle...

Just courious, how is that 7mag shooting on paper @ 500 yards right now? Cutting that 26 could change the harmonics of the barrel. At 200 it may be no big deal, but if you are serious about a long range rig. I would want to know before I chop. Knowing what a "cartridge" is capable of, is a long way from knowing what the gun is really doing. I'm not saying you don't know, just putting it out there for others as well.
