I would like to reduce my 300 mag barrel from 26 inch to 24 inch. Factory barrel sporter contour. What are opinions about loss of velocity vs. ease of use with shorter barrel?

Is 24 inch sufficient for 300 Winchester Mag? I am currently shooting 165 grain loads.

Many factory rifles in .300WM were made with 24" barrels.. Between the two there's maybe 50-75 fps difference in velocity.

Never could see much better ease of use between a 24" and 26" bbl. FOR ME it seems 22" and below makes for a more compact rifle although my go to rifle has a 24" bbl.

til later

Mw,NOT suggesting you cut your bbl down to 22" or below!!!

I'm building a 24" .300 Win Mag right now on a Montana action. That is a good combination of adequate length and decent handling characteristics.

What I have is a Model 70 with factory sporter barrel. It is an older classic version I found that has not been fired very much.

Good rifle.. A cut/recrown should run you $40 or thereabouts..

One practical advantage of a 24" barrel is that it is easier to find a gun case that fits.

QuarterChoke, you nailed that. I don't have a soft rifle case right now that can handle a 26" barrel. Last year my brother went on a guided Wyoming wilderness hunt. He took his Kimber 84m. He told me the guides furnished good scabbards, but even his short action 24" Kimber was a tight fit.
