I bought the kids some crawdad pots. It sounds like, from what I've read, you need to somehow suspend the bait inside the pot so they can only reach it by going inside? Anyone have a good trick for this? And what is a good readily available bait? TIA, huskyrunnr.

Oily fish works best, but almost any food will work.

I've done quite a bit of crawdad trapping and I never suspended the bait, just put it on the bottom. I always used whatever fish carcasses I had from my last fishing trip.
I don't know where you are located but if you are near the great lakes DO NOT use any fish from the great lakes in a body of water that does not join the great lakes directley for fear of spreading VHS.

You can also make a bait box out of chicken wire or something similar. It allows them to get small pieces out at a time and keep new ones coming in. I also use old chicken, fish guts/heads, and pieces of crawdads that I have "disassembled" for bait purposes.
