If the mag box gets cocked it binds the follower and spring and the follower doesn't apply upward pressure on the cartridges and they just rattle around.

I would check to see that the mag box is seated properly. If you spread the sides of the box a bit so you have to pinch them together when inserting it in the receiver they will spring out and apply outward pressure to help hold it in place.

I would stretch the spring a tad bit to put a bit more pressure against the follower.

I know nothing about 700's but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn. I've had both a Winchester and a Weatherby that were delivered with the wrong magazine spacer. They did the same thing yours seems to be doing.

Is your rifle ADL or BDL configuration? Is it as-shipped from the factory, or has it been pieced together? It's possible to put a BDL mag box in an ADL stock as the BDL box is shorter in height. The shorter BDL box will typically fall free of the receiver and could certainly cause the problem you describe.

BDL models have hinged floorplates and ADL's don't. smile The ADL mag box is slightly taller than the BDL and attaches to the receiver with a 5x40 screw. They are not interchangeable.

Recent ADL mag boxes do not have the small tab with hole that allows it to be screw attached to the receiver. I guess that the current plastic stocks are held to smaller tolerances than the older wood stocks and the boxes do not need to be held by a screw.

My ADL synthetic rifle I bought new 4 years ago has the tab. I had to do some work on it b/c it wasn't loading rounds correctly. The fact you don't have a box is interesting b/c the follower rides against it. I had to polish mine to make the follower ride smoothly and level, otherwise, the follower would hang on front so that the rear of the follower would not come up completely. I also polished the edges of the follower and applied very light amount of lithium grease--problems solved.

Check Numrich too for a price comparison.

The primary reason for the tab and the attachment screw on ADL boxes is because there ain't no floor plate to look/reach through to check/snap the box into the receiver. smile
