Here is one to make your stomach churn. From a Canadian website, url below.
Rather than bothering with getting a Possession Only Licence and registering their firearms some people are simply turning in their guns to the authorities for destruction. Please, remember there are other options!
When the firearm is of some historical significance, a museum may be interested in adding it to their collection. If this is the case you should be able to get a tax receipt for a charitable donation.

You can sell or give your gun to someone appropriately licenced (i.e., with an FAC or PAL) or to a firearms dealer. The market for used firearms is very depressed at the moment because so many people are selling firearms; hence prices are a fraction of what they were 10 years ago.

You can have the firearm deactivated so that it becomes a "non-firearm". Call 1-800-731-4000 and ask for the deactivation guidelines.
http://www.firearmstraining.ca/unwanted.html

Anyone with an "unwanted firearm" feel free to email me and I'll send you the address of my local FFL holder for shipping to a new home where I will give it love and affection....

Same thing happening in Australia. I was talking to the policeman in charge of our local firearms branch, and he said that he'd just had a heavy barrelled Remington 700 handed in. Apparently in excellent condition. Still equipped with scope. This gun was destroyed.....
