Hey, All. I'm a newbie to this forum, and don't know a lot about Savage 1899s. I've always been a Winchester lever gun guy, and only recently started to appreciate the Savage. I just bought a nice .300 and am trying to figure out what model it is. When I pulled the butt plate, I found the letters "YG" after the serial number stamped on the butt and the inside of the plate. This gun is #571XXX and, by my calculations, built in 1951. What's got me puzzled is this suffix, which I assume is a model designation, but not one I can find any mention of in my reference books or the one 1899 collectors website I've found. Can anyone shed some light on small mystery? Thanks! TT

It's not a model suffix. Just an assembly or inspection code.

Being 1951, it will be only one of two models. The 99EG had a schnabel forearm, the 99R had a rounded forearm.

Welcome to the forum!

PS: Check out the pictures section at www.savagela.org to see pictures of pretty much all of the different models

Calhoun: I assumed it was an EG until I found the "YG." Mine has the schnabel forend, with a 24-in. barrel and capped, checkered pistol grip. I have a bad feeling this won't be my last 99, as I'm pretty compulsive about these things wink Thanks from a fellow Nebraskan. TT

No problem. The good thing for you is there's not a lot of 99's floating around Nebraska. I do know where a 90% 1909 1899A in 303 is now, but it'll be top $$ when it hits the shelf.

www.savagela.org has pics of most of the models, and the Murray's book is worth the $$ (See the Misc. Good Info thread at the top of the forum for ordering info). These 99's are awesome, and it's VERY difficult to stop with one or two. grin
