Here's another set of lyrics for that tune. I can't speak for its authenticity, but supposedly this was the song of the 1st Alabama Union Cavalry:

I heard Tom T. Hall sing the tune with other words. Powerful melody. Powerful words, regardless of whose side you were on.

Hey, they're from your area. I just ran across them by accident. "Apostate" is a good word since the COnfederacy has taken on most of the trappings of a cult or a religion.

Never heard of them til now...guess there's no wonder why. Bunch a damned turncoat Confederate deserters!

What exactly do you mean by that?

Well, those that served in the Confederate cause have been raised to legendary status. Those that led the Confederacy have been all but canonized, and the people today that worship it see it only for the good things and none of the bad. OH, and there's the faith that it will be resurrected.

Like it or not, The Confederacy went under because it was tied to the anchor of slavery. The cause of states' rights was a noble one. Unfortunately for us all, the institution of slavery was one that made a convenient issue for Lincoln to use to rile up the Union. Regardless of the political motivation, many of the rank and file fighting in the Union believed that they were fighting to end slavery.

On a side note, whenever the subject of reparations comes up, I simply tell those that are for it that Arlington Cemetary is full of reparations. Most of which the reparations seekers don't deserve.
