My first rifle was a Winchester model 64/30-30, circa 1972. Of course it was sold in the 80's, now I have a 99eg/300 Savage. I've been thinking of trying to find another 64 and replace the 99. I'll likely use it for black tail deer, cougar, and black bear. Anyone seen a Winchester Model 64 lately?

What you had was not an original Winchester Model 64 - which were all "pre-64's". The model made in 1972 was the post-64 Model 64A, with the changed internals, and they turned out to have one of the lowest production numbers of any model Winchester 94 - and good used ones are priced accordingly. (now upwards of $1K) There are two, for sale, on gunsamerica, for a little less: http://www.savagearms.com/25model_classicsporter.htm(GA Number: 990171835 and another: GA Number: 982966222
It ain't no fun, when the rabbit's got the gun

Also Winchester made the NRA Centennial rifle in 1971, While it is marked as a Model 94 you can see what inspired them to bring back the 64A in 72. Here are a couple for sale. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=102178212http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=101732908Heres my 1971 NRA Centennial Rifle And my 1953 Model 64

MPMAX, As your fellow westside Oregonian I am astonished that the clear air of our beautiful state would allow such thinking to enter your head. Trade your 99 for a Winchester? I don't blame you for starting out with one, but to return to such childish ways after having come so far- that is hard to take. All I can say is what's the the first three digits of the serial number on your 99 and how much do want for it? RP

RP I can't explain my desire to recapture my youth...but, the Savage's serial starts with 550xxx (1950). It's drilled & tapped, sling swiveled, accessorized (dies, brass, factory ammo). Let's keep negociations local and by private message.

I bought a WW11 era Win 64 from Mazamas in Eugene Or. about 6 months ago. They had a post 64 at that time also. Prolly not much chance it's still there. Virgil B.

There's a 1971 NRA Commemorative for under $500 on GunsAmerica if you're interested.

I'd take a model 99, in pretty much any caliber over a Winchester 64/94 any day of the week. My recomendation is keep the 99, and save up for the Winny. -TomT

I tried getting the link, but am too computer illiterate I guess since I couldn't get it to work.
I just went to search and typed in "Winchester 30-30" and found it on the 2nd page.

Just saw a nice 1941 Win. 64 at a local gunshop.. for $799. I think I'll stick to Savage 99's. I'd really suggest keeping the 99.. you'll regret it later just like you regret selling the 64 now.

I love lever actions, here's what you get when you really like them. Model 88 in 338-08, Model 64 in 30-30 and Model 99 in 358. The 88 is around 1966, Model 64 is 1955 and the 99 is around 1958

My choice was made easier by not selling my 99. I had one really good offer (Thanks Ray!), but didn't accept it in a timely manner. I may have subconsciously sabotaged the deal so I could keep the Savage.
