Just finished my 9.3x62mm Mauser and since everyone is always wondering about recoil I thought I would post comparisons I have direct information about. This information maybe should go in Medium and Large bore also.

9.3 x 62mm - 23.6" bbl, 7.75 lb with 5 rounds...Horn 286 Recoil proof, 58 gr Varget - 2350 f/s...NO muzzle brake 36 ftlb/17 f/s velo...with muzzle brake 26 ftlb/17 f/s velo.

375 H&H - 20" bbl, 11 lb with 4 rounds...Horn 270 gr SP, 80 gr powder - 2700 f/s...NO muzzle brake 32 ftlb/14 f/s velo...with muzzle brake 25 ftlb/14 f/s velo.

416 Taylor - 24" bbl, 11 lbs with 4 rounds...Speer 350 MT, 75 gr powder - 2400 f/s...NO muzzle brake 41 ftlb/15 f/s velo...with muzzle brake 30 ftlb/15 f/s velo.

As you can see there are lots of differences going into which "kicks" the worst and guessing doesn't get it. I don't find any of these rifles all that much of a recoil problem with or without brakes...EXCEPT...when it comes to getting back on target quickly...having a brake means less recoil and the rifles with a brake are much quicker getting back on targer...It's pretty much a no brainer to me when confronting something long in the tooth and a bit riled up.

The 9.3 although much lighter in weight and less velocity has actualy more recoil and the muzzle has more than twice the rise. I set the front sight back far enough to add a brake if I wanted so I probably will. This rifle was originally conceived as a short range, open sighted, fast handling shooter and as it sits at just under 8 lbs it is a joy to handle and shoot except for the muzzle jump. I don't want to add weight so I will add a muzzle brake to straighten it out.

This isn't a tome on muzzle brake vs no brake, I don't much care one way or another, it was for informational purposes for those that want to know about or can understand...variability.

How did you measure recoil?

Nothing but physics...and Newtons laws...for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction...F=MA...or the easy way...use a recoil calculating program found anywhere on the net. Check out some of the muzzle brake forums and makers and look for Recoil.exe...it will calculate recoil with or without a brake.

Tikkanut...you could use a brake, as many who understand the nuances of Newton do, to keep the muzzle down on your Vartag so you can see bullet hits...one of those old timey tricks used by 22-250, 220 Swift, 22-284 shooters in the old days before everyone got to be smarter than the average Hogan. If you need an Xtra HD recoil pad because you got your stock too short, I don't see any reason not to go for it. Hey, my last 22 lb benchrester 22-284 had one...sometimes I think my 17 FB could use one also. Of course recoils is totally subjective so if the Vartag is too much for you at the other end...well I wish I could help you, but I just can't reach you.

What is it someone said..."No good deed goes unpunished". laugh
