Front and back halves and a backpack. Anything on wheels is useless where we chase deer and elk. Some day I'll get too old for that and buy a team of mules to do the packing.

Where I hunt it would take days to drag a muley out so I've started boning them out and putting all the meat in a elk quarter canvas bag. I strap it onto the meatshelf of my Badlands 2200 and out we go. My pack usualy weighs 90-120lbs when loaded with meat so over the flatter stuff where you live it wouldn't be too bad. Good luck to ya!

Nowadays I just find one near a farm road and shoot it. When I was in my 20s and 30s, didn't care how far the drag was. I ain't 30 anymore.

Last year's doe was within 50 feet of a road. Only deer I've had closer to transportation, was the one that got the finishing shot near my truck, although the truck wasn't near the road at the time and the buck ran right towards it and collapsed. That was also the only buck I ever killed that took more'n one shot.

It's all in the timing (aka dumb luck). whistle

Open to interpretation whether or not one can quarter a deer and move it in pieces in PA, since the tag is supposed to be attached before moving deer, bear and turkeys.

Out of state: Quarter, insert into sacks, insert into pack, haul out on back.

In state: Pull up to deer in truck. throw into back, head to skinning rack, skin, throw meat in ice chest, process in kitchen...grin...

I usually don't need to bring on more than a quarter mile, and there is usually snow cover. I gut them, then wrap the front legs behind the neck, wrap a strap around the legs an neck. The other loop of the strap goes under my arm pits and around the back of my neck. Its not bad if I go at a moderate pace, and if I had a really long drag I might do something else, but this works well for me. Often I am with other hunters, and bringing out a deer is almost a social event, not a chore.

Its best to play a tune on your grunt call while doing this.

I'd gut it first, then drag it out.

Using a plastic sled is nice but don't forget to bring something to tie the deer on the sled with.

I've always had the sled slip out from under the deer when draggin. So securing him on there is always a trick.

If you can get one other person to help, we use what we call "The Wheel" It was bought in the '50s and is still doing it's job cool One wheel makes it manuverable and narrow , carries most of the weight , rolls over stuff better than smaller wheels and is light for when you do need to lift it over a log or such.

But since I usually choose to hunt alone , I saw some heavy duty plastic sleds at a sporting goods store last fall and will get one for this year.

Actually , I'm not sure blush Just never heard of anyone not doing so. I do believe that regs state the the tag is suposed be filled out at the kill site , but doesn't have to be afixed untill reaching a road or camp (site). After the drag , before transporting.

I'd be curious, cuzz I can't see having to march 2 miles back to get a Roman cart or bobsled when I can just hack it up and throw the deer in my pack.

At 62, it is almost impossible to recover a large deer. My young hunting partner PCS'd to a new duty station last year so this year will be limited to small does close to a road. This will probably be my last year deer hunting. After that, just small game.

I've seen a method on here for quartering with the hide on that looked somewhat attractive. It was in the past two years, of that I'm sure.

I've got a deer cart that works on level even ground. My last one that went over 270 lb liveweight was at the bottom of a ravine, after gutting, it was still too big to get up with the cart. The wheels kept finding soft spots and sinking in and the cart kept tipping. I finally gave up and took 45 minutes bringing down the 4x4 truck. The previous 200+ lb deer had come out of that same ravine. It took me 4 hours with just a drag.

What I've thought about is mounting an ATV winch and a battery on the deer cart and then using that to winch a sled up the hill 50 feet at a time. Maybe somebody can tell me if that would work.

Somebody needs to breed deer that run uphill when shot.

haven't had to worry bout packin a deer out so far...though my intention is to locate deer after the shot, get my truck n get as close as possible to the location, get back to the deer, tie rope to it, drag to truck, gut, load up and bring back to camp smile

Though a cheap sled of some sort sounds a better idea grin
