I intend to hunt buff, leopard, and plains game. One outfitter recommends August, the other May. What's the best compromise month considering bugs, weather, and unspooked game?

Doc,
South of the equator as you know the seasons are just opposite of ours. If I had to pick one month it would be september, it is starting to warm up in sept. and october and Nov. can be good, simply because only permante water holes have any water left and all animals are consentrated in those areas. It is simpler then to check the water holes find tracks and proceed from there. August is about as good. If your hunting area has long grass, it is usually burned in june and july. This lets the new grass start to sprout and in buffalo areas this is a large drawing card. If leopard is your primary target then may and june is quite good. The cats seem to be more active during the cooler weather. May, is a little early most everywhere, and some outfits give a discount when hunting that early. Again, it depends on where you are hunnting. Ranch hunting may not be effected as much. Cheers.
George

Doc,
I have been "told" that anytime between June and Sept is a good time to go. This is their winter. It's cooler then (I hate hot weather) and dryer. I plan on going in early July (2002).
Tell us about the outfitter your going with and accomodations, hunting, prices and the like.
I am going for plains game: Kudu, Gemsbok, Impala, Zebra, Warthog and Blesbok. This will be my first trip to Africa. I will be in the northern part of South Africa. Ten days hunting, 12 days total in the country. If I don't have an opportunity to kill all the animals listed in the package I am refunded the trophy fee for said animal(s). The Safari includes everything except pack and dip and shipment of capes and horns back to the USA. I am picked up at the airport and afterwards taken back to the airport. The package price is $4100.00, everything included (except as noted).
Don [Linked Image]
