I was in the new Cabelas in Hamburg, PA last night and I spotted a Kimber 84M Montana. I had never handled one so I waited quite a while for a clerk as those superstores are mobbed. When he got it for me he said "wow that's light". It was obvious that he had not seen that rifle either. It must go what the catalog says at 5.25 lbs.

So I let on that I already have a couple of wood stocked ones and went over the pillar bedded, match chamber montra that you may have read here. He walks over and comes back with a Remington Titanium gun in 30-06. It is longer than the Kimber, thicker a little heavier and feels clumsy comared to the Montana.

I tell him of the deficiencies of the Remington design and some of the facts of their business situation.

Pretty soon he figures out that I am not going to buy a Remington so he changes the subject and wants to know if the 7mm-08 is more accurate than the 270 Win. I tell him that it's the rifle that counts. Cartridges don't matter in sporters within proportion. When I site the loads for each cartridge from memory and the resultant velocities etc. he gets an education.

Nice store. Polite clerks. Cabelas is a major tourist attraction. There are so many people here that there are two shuttle buses running to the far parking lots.

I would be interested in what you consider "facts"? Be careful Don, Remington might get wind of your campaign to put them out of business and take exception.

At least the Cabela's people are well trained. I'm betting he didn't take you too seriously.- Sheister

Let it go dude....

So you don't like Remingtons, a bunch of us do however. You are entitled to your opinion and we are entitled to ours. Why don't you just promote the guns you like w/o making repeated digs at the ones you don't?

It must be nice to know it all!

You want to talk about a rifle that feels clumsy in my hands, it's the Savage 99. I've been trying for years to find one that didn't because I think they look cool. Every one I try feels like a damn 2 x 4. Now the rifle that fits me like a glove is the Remington Mountain rifle in either long or short action. And as far as Kimbers go, I drove three and a half hours to Grice's in central PA to check them out. They had 3 of them. The stocks felt like they were paper thin, and the actions were as smooth as sandpaper. So far three out of five Kimbers that I've had my hands on had the forend touching the barrel on one side. I'll stick to my Remingtons! But then again I don't know it all like you!

Don,
Perhaps you need to take your bullhorn with you the next time you visit Cabelas. Maybe we'll get lucky when they have you arrested for being a public nuisance!

I would have liked to be behind you with all that wind blowing, I would have chimed in and embarrased the crap out of you. You go to a public place to spout velocities of cartridges to salespeople from Cabelas? Try to act like you just laid down the latest issue of Shooting Times. It ain`t gonna work or impress anyone here, my thought is YOU NEED A LIFE. I bet you got a straw basket full of all the latest rags right by the crapper. You pretended to own a rifle? I don`t think that is all that you pretend. Silly Willy.

Holy Cow!!!

That hit real close to home for me! But it's not full of the lastest 'rags', as I don't buy them. But there's a couple WoodenBoat magazines, Bear Hunter magazines, and a ton of catalogs.

My point was that there are salemen suggesting Remingtons which is somewhat of a surpise considering the facts.

I went back there and got another salesman who I asked to hand me the M84 Classic there in .260 as it has a nice stock.

He proceeded to tell me that it was junk just like all American made products are. I told him what I thought of him in clear polite language. The kind of words that make you think.

This person is the exception however and that store is a credit to the outdoor community.

All of the barrel channels in the Kimbers there that I saw were very straight. However there is a $1200 25-06 there by Cooper that has as crooked a free floated barrel channel as any I have seen.

Check it out.

"My point was that there are salemen suggesting Remingtons which is somewhat of a surpise considering the facts."

Do you really not know the majority of this stuff is opinion, not fact? How many of the facts do you really know?

Are you aware of the issues with the other rifle designs? Do you know a Rem will hold pressures and control gas that other actions will vent into your face? Did you know that Rem has sold almost double the amount of bolt rifles as it's next closest competitor? Are you aware of CRFs that jam and CRF extractors that are blown off the rifle? Are you aware of M-98s venting gas into a shooter's face, and M-98s that have the bolt lugs set back into the receiver? Howa about the Wby Vanguards/Howa's that let the bolt fly into the shooter upon firing?

The list goes on and on. If you dislike Rems, that's fine. But you need to understand many folks who have detailed knowledge of firearms like them very much. Brand preference is just that--a preference. There is no right or wrong here.

Savage_99,

You are a fortunate person to have good Kimbers. My only experience with Kimber was with a heavy barrel .22 single shot. It had a 36X Leupold with a 1/8 dot. At fifty yards the dot covered half of the 1/8" circles I was to shot at. After trying ten to twelve brands of ammo, (including target and match) I told the fellow for whom I was, shooting my modified 10/22 could beat the groups I was getting from this $1,200 rifle. And I did.

When he published the results in Guns and Ammo he left off all the 1s in the groups. He had several groups listed for the fifty yard shooting, like .380", .472", .237". When I asked him about this he said, "I must have left off the 1s. O well, I owed Kimber a favor anyway."

Loyalty to the mark (Kimber) is commendable, I think.

I'm also curious to know what the "facts" are regarding Remingtons. I'm a Savage man myself, mostly because they're easy and cheap to switch barrels on, but I have no bias against Remingtons. And while some folks complain that their quality is currently declining, that doesn't make them somehow unsafe, if that's the implication. What are the "facts", and why shouldn't a clerk recommend a Remington? What are you on about?

WHAT? Gratuitous Enfield bashing???

I share a fondness with many for old rifles, and have a particular thing for Enfields.

That rifle looks to be uncommonly clean for its age, and maybe has had more than the average amount of work put into sportserizing. Wouldn't surprise me at all if if was competently bedded into that stock as well. Plus being a no. 1 the chamber wont be oversize like on a no. 4.

Tell ya what, if it was at Cabela's I'd prob'ly look at it first over most of the generic stuff on the Cabela's rack.

so you went to a gun store and handled a couple of guns - and that is worthy of an inflammatory post?

i go to gun stores all the time and handle guns, including cabela's... guess i should post more...

hicountry... prob'ly I'm oversensitive as an uncommon amount of the firearms in my safe retailed for around $149.95 . Some day though I'd like to get a serious knockaround (if that ain't an oxymoron) rifle built around one of those .308 Ishapur Enfield actions.

Having been to Wally World et al. numerous times, I AM impressed that the clerks at the Cabela's rifle counter knew which end the bullet goes in

Blaine,
Could you elaborate a little more on this, I heard the Howa was a decent action? Does it have a poor vent route?

Thanks,
MtnHtr
