Vintage are better than new ones.. best place is probably an auction site, unless somebody pops up with one they have for sale.

I like the Lyman William's Fool-Proof.

I have one of these that mounts in the factory scope holes. Will this clear the cocked indicator on a pre mill with factory scope holes?

I like the steel Lymans and Redfields. Since you have a pre-1M 99F, you could mount the receiver sight in the tang holes and mount a set of modified Weaver bases so that you'd have the option of using the receiver sight or a scope using QD/QR rings.

IMO the steel sights are too heavy. The idea behind the 'F' (Featherweight) is light weight. If I gotta carry it,I want it as light as I can get it.

The Vari X III 1.5x5 looks/works good on a 99-F.

Not me. The difference in weight between a quality Lyman or Redfield steel receiver sight and a Williams FP or Redfield 80 series alloy receiver sight is a negligible. Besides, the 99F is only a featherweight in 1950s terms and when compared to the 99EG and 99R.
If I was going to seriously hunt with 99, I'd much rather have the light-gathering benefit of a good scope, which is why my 99F in 260 is equiped with a 2-7x Leupold.
