I have a few Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32s. The only thing "shotgun" about them that I can see is that they have the parallex set at either 50 or 75 yards, I don't recall which, while most "HP rifle" scopes have the parallex set at 150 yards. I have a Nikon ProStaff on a Remington 710 that I bought as a loaner for the deer hunting club that I used to belong to. It got used hard with little effort to "baby" it and the scope has held up fine.
I haven't had any trouble with Nikon scopes, but if you're currently looking for a 2-7x scope, I think that the 2-7x33 Leupold Rifleman that Wal-Mart is closing out for $135+/- is a better choice. The wholesale price for a Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32 with a matte finish is around $100 and you can often buy them on eBay for less than $125. Another good, lower priced, 2-7x scope is the Weaver RV7. The RV7 is a little smaller than the Nikon and it comes in gloss and silver finishes, but not (IIRC) a matte finish.
