Today I found a Savage 99 E in .243 at a pawn shop. It has a cheap Tasco scope mounted on the receiver and has sling swivels. Serial # starts C234. It is in good shape with some of the butt stock finish wearing off in flakes. Rotary mag. but no cartridge counter. Blue is intact exept for the 99 hand wear at the bottom of the receiver. My book says that this was manufactured from the 60's to the 80's. It says it has a walnut stock but it looks lke birch to me. Pressed checkering. Can someone tell me year of manufacture and a little more about the E's. I have a 99 C in .308 and a 99 ? in 300 Savage. Th last one is the one with the indented groove around the fron part of the front grip. Were E's tapped for scope mounting at the factory? Paid $325.00 OTD.

I think that'd be a 1976 or 1977 rifle based off of the serial number. Somebody with more info will hopefully jump in and narrow it down.

99E's were all tapped for scopes, and truthfully I don't know what the stock is made from. Murray's says walnut, but... $325 is a fair price to pay for a 243, they usually tend to sell for a bit more than the 300's and 308's. Should be a great shooter once you replace that Tasco (hint, hint.. grin).

Good pick up, that rifle should serve you well!

That E was made about 1976. Yes Es were tapped for scope mounting at the factory. I don't know about other parts of the country but $325 would be a steal around these parts.

Down here in Southeast Georgia you don't see many 99's. The few I have seen have been at gun shows. This is the 1st I've ever seen at a pawn shop. It was in Hinesville, Ga. where Fort Stewart is located. It probably belonged to some yankee soldier who was hard up for some cash. One of the other pawn shops had a Savage pump 30-30 carbine for $200.00. I wondered about that one. I am familiar with the values of 99's but not all that familiar with the pumps. Does anybody have any opinions about them.

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

I've had both the 30-30 and the 35 Rem in the Savage pumps and while I tend to agree with Jed on them I still really like the 35 Rem for a brush buster and driving deer out into the fields.

Got it topped with a Savage 2.5X scope with post reticle.

I have a really clean 99E in 243. My friend in CA gave it to me as a gift when I was stationed there. It shoots 100 gr Win PP really well. Actually, my wife hunts with it, and so would I. It is my first 99. Seems like a good price to me, considering that it is only about 3-4 tank fillups..

I took my new 99E to the range yesterday. What a shooter. 6 shots into one ragged hole at 100 meters even with the cheap scope. Very sub MOA. This thing is a real keeper.

That is one satisfying range day smile Much as I am not a fan of post-mils, I can't malign a rifle that shoots as well as your 99E.
