Yup, four props. The props are higher than folks would think. I could walk under them during preflight and not hit my head and I'm 5'-10". A prop hitting a large animal like a deer at 100 knots would be bad for the animal and the plane. A pink/reddish mist is about right though. Believe it or not a bird can get through a Herk's prop in flight and go down the engine intake (in pieces). The props are turning about 1076 RPM in flight. I wonder what the odds would be on that in Vegas?

The buck actually hit the plane forward of the crew entrance door and gored a hole through the skin just under the battery compartment. He was then slung under the plane just inside the left main gear. A VHF radio antenna was bent back and I believe thats what got his tail.

Nice buck. Glad to see there are still a few guys out there that don't only shoot in-lines. I still shoot both and was just given a flint lock I might have to try my luck with.

Randy, you win! A train has the weight vs. speed thing going for it. Speed kills but a choo choo is better. laugh

I've used a 325 WSM with 200gr. Accubonds just to see what it would do to them,it worked just like it did on large Caribou in Canada last year,it TOTALLY KNOCKED THEM SIDEWAYS OFF THEIR FEET,the guide and my partner said the same thing after both animals went down,we all heard loud crack as the bullet hit them.I was impressed.
I also have a Custom 300 Jarrett and use 165gr. Nosler Ballistic tips chronoed at 3504fps,it will put a hurt on deer and hogs.I really like the whomp sound as the bullet hits.

mch,

Idaho had a traditional weapons only hunt for awhile; no inlines allowed. They have since reverted to "any" muzzleloader. As long as they never allow scopes, I'm ok with it, still, I prefer traditional equipment. I'd love to try a flint lock one day.

Both bucks were taken within 50 yards; one with a maxi-hunter and the other with a maxi-ball.

depopulator,

I like that photo.

Does a 3 D-cell Maglight qualify? Took care of 2 car hit deer with mine, didn't have a gun for one and the other was in town so didn't want to shoot.

As for firearms, 30-06 for cartridge size, 45 cal smokepole for caliber.

Discounting the privious attempts at levity, I belive the original poster was interested in single projectile, shoulder fired weapons... smile

Personally, the biggest rifle I've ever used was a .416 Rigby, (97.0 grs. of Rel-19/350 Speer FN) The shot was taken at a lasered 92 yds. 1st time I've ever drawn blood at both ends at the same time. (Damn short eye-relief Burris scope got my eyebrow blush )

At the shot, the deer took two hops and immeadiately expired. (Imagine that!) Thumb-sized entrance wound and the exit wound about 50 cent pc size. After removing the hide, one could easily place one's fist completely through the deer. smile

BION, there was very little wasted meat.

The dean of big-bores, Elmer Keith, often advocated the use of the .338 Win Mag on Antelope and Deer.

It has been my experience that large bullets in the realm of 2400 to 2600 f.p.s. muzzle velocity produce the desired results with very little meat damage. One could do a lot worse.

As stated previously by Mule Deer , reduced velocity loads for the .340 Wby, should do nicely.

Look in Speer manual #9. They have reduced loads for numerous cartridges. Also, many older reloading manuals have reduced loads.

404 Jeffery. It worked. The deer died. Right there.

There is a very fine line between idiotic and clever. Most internet posters have no idea where it is.
