I am thinking of taking a non-collectable Savage 99 in 300 Sav with a medium barrel and rechamber and ream to 338-300 Sav AI 40*. Any thoughts or info on this rifle/cartridge or where this work could be reasonably done is appreciated. Thanks.George

I'm not sure that I've heard of a 338 AI on the 300 Savage case. (maybe been done...I dunno) However, the 338-08 has been done quite a bit. I have one on a 21" bbl. Rem 700 S/A. With the 308 case right there, it seems to me that blowing out the 300 Sav. is just reinventing the wheel for no reason.

If you make a change in the shape of your case in a 99 savage with a rotery magazine you will also have to modify the magazine or it will not accept the cases. If you have one of the clip fed modles it might be less complicated. Example If you rechamber a 300 savage to a 308 win. you also have to reshape the magazine. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

i would like to stay away from the trouble and cost of working on the magazine, so I am trying to use the Savage case. If I were taking a Rem 600 in 308 to 338, I would use the 308 case. Can I open the 300 Sav to 338 without feeding problems in the 99? If so, how about an Ackley Improvement to that? Can you AI a 250-3000 without problems in a 99? Thanks. George

From what I have heard and what I know about Sav 99s, you should trade your 300 on a 308 and go from there. The rifle that handles a 308 will not need any other mods. but the barrel. for more info., post your questions on the Savage collectors forum a couple clicks down the list. Mark.

Croldfort,
the shoulder of the 300 sav. is already 30 degrees and the shoulder diameter is .446. If you take the shoulder to .450 the shoulder will change to 31 degrees.I don't think going to a 40 degree shoulder will gain much in this case.I'm not sure but taking the shoulder out to .450 probably won't hurt feeding.

Try some 308 empties in your mag and see if they will fit and try to feed. I would be inclined to do a 338-08 if possible. dingus

The round described would be nearly the same as the .338 IHMSA that the silhouette association developed. Remaining velocity may not be high enough for reliable expansion for a hunting round. What little I know about the .338 IHMSA from its metal critter days is that it worked well, but kicked some.

Thanks guys. Great info. I had a chance to buy a 300 Sav with a shortened barrel, but I let it go. If I do a .338, I think I'll use a .308 or .30-06 case. George
