I just discovered that this rifle existed, and am considering purchasing one for informal target shooting, and possibly for some hunting. The reports that I have read so far are quite promising, and the price is far below that of a custom rifle.Does anyone here own one,and what do you think of it?

Had one a couple of years ago. It was a scary accurate, ragged hole shooter - w/ good handloads. Capable of way better then informal target shooting. Might be a bit heavy for long hikes in the foothills though.

I wasn't planning on using it for any mountain hunting. It I use it at all for hunting it will be for pronghorn or deer over fields.I just placed an order for the rifle, and a nightforce nxs 3.5x15x50 scope and mounts.

I think you will be quite happy w/ it. Mine had a silky smooth action, & a great trigger. I've been told that early on, Remington also 5R barreled some of their other .308 cal tactical & varmint rifles. The first clue, would be a 24" (as opposed to 26") barrel.

I have one set up with the same nightforce you ordered and badger mounts. One word describing it - GREAT!! Best out-of-the-box shooter I've owned. You'll be happy. I shoot mine at 300 and 600 mostly. Routinely a sub-MOA performer.
Do be sure to follow the basics and get a bore guide for cleaning. A lucas works well if you don't have one already. You'll find the 5 rifling grooves and radiused root make bore cleaning very easy. Also, I didn't mind the xmark trigger at all. I did end up dropping in a riflebasix but I wonder if that was really worth it. Have a good time - you bought a great rifle/optics package.

This is actually the first factory rifle that I have purchased in many years. All of my rifles are sub moa shooters,so if this gun shoots with them,I will be impressed.I have never shot at 1000 yards before, but we now have a 1000 yard range locally.I thought that I would try this rifle before laying out big cash for a custom target rifle to see if I like the long range shooting. If I really like long range shooting, and I want even better accuracy,I can always have the action trued and add a match grade barrel later.

Get some SMK 190's and you'll be in business @ 1000. 175's work reasonable well at that distance also.

Using the Lyman reloading guide as reference, I found 41 gr Varget worked best. The range published for that powder is between ~38 and 42. I seat to 2.78 COAL and use a Fed210M primer. Was was shooting CCIBR's for a time with the same load and saw no difference. YMMV - start low and work up!!!

FWIW - 42 gr Varget with Lapua and 175SMKs run very nicely out of my rifle. I seat to 2.80 COAL and use a fed210m. I used CCIBR's for a time and recently switched to the federals and noted no change. Funny, people seem to find the sweet spot with 175's somewhere between 42 and 44 of Varget. I might just as well throw the bullets as shoot mine with 44!! I am going to start out with some Lapua brass, and some 175's,and see what kind of accuracy that I get.

I will certainly try some Varget, since people seem to be having such good results.
