#1. .338 win mag / Rem mod 700 LH w/ leu 1.75 x 6 vari x 3
primarily for moose and bears

#2. 7 mag / Rem mod 700 Lh w/ Leu 2x7 compact 7.25 lbs. ready to roll for sheep, caribou, wolves and anything else in a pinch

#3. WWG .45/70 (actually .457) w QD leu scout scope 2.5 power for knocking around the woods, traveling by snowmachine or boat and would use it for all of the above but not my 1st choice for sheep, but would work if I get within 175 yards.

Rimfire for teaching the kids general fun and keeping the squirrel population in check is a Ruger 10/22 for me and a cut down Win mod 57 bolt single shot for the kids

I don't hunt much with a rifle, except the years when I'm lucky enough to hunt elk, then I use my lefty .338-06 SUCKS with a Schneider barrel and McMillan stock. Those I actually shoot regularly are:

1. .22 RF M1885 Winchester, Kimber 82 lefty, and customized 10/22
2. .40-65 Browning BPCR
3. .223 Tikka lefty Whitetail Hunter

This year my 7mm-08 Tikka may make the short list.

.22 long rifle in a Marlin bolt
.30-06 in a Ruger M77
7mm Rem Mag, also in Ruger M77

If you count carrying hunting, and not shooting, substitute the .30-06 with a .50 cal Hawken flinter by CVA! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
7mm

My favorites that get the most use are:
7mm-08, Model 7 MS w/ 1.75X6 Leo, for Deer and Black Bear
.338-06, 700 Mnt Rfl LSS w/ 1.75X6 Leo, Deer, BB, Elk
.222 Rem, BDL w/4X12 Leo, Woodchucks, coyote

Rimfire:
22 Mag, 1894 Marlin, Squirrels, and Woodchucks

There are others, but this IS what I NEED and go to.

Franke I'm surprised, out of the millions of 30-30's out there somewhere you are the only one that even mentioned it. Is everyone too embarassed to admit it? The 30-30 represents, to me anyway, my BIGBORE, after my 6MM and 22LR.

Bolt action favoured, load for seventeen calibers, but use mostly,375 H&H, 300 win mag, 25/06, 308 win and 303 British.
But now think I am going to try and afford to get a 338/06 built.

JustMe,
Yes,I'm a little surprised, too. I think that you said it right, that it is too bland a cartridge, and too old a rifle;it's just not cool.
On the other hand,I'm a newbe, myself. Four years ago,the only levergun that I ever had was my Daisy, around 1944.
But i've been bitten by the bug. All of my beloved boltguns are gathering dust in the rack.
