Live in Portland Oregon area. Have been quoted 90 to 100 bucks just for a crown job by well known smith shop here. Was wanting to get the action bedded to the stock also. Gun is 257 wby vanguard sub-moa in pristine condition but just doesn't shoot as well as advertised. I want to know about how much these services should cost so if I should look elsewhere for this work. I haven't yet been quoted for the bedding service but I imagine its more than 150.00. Thanks.

Those are suppose to shoot MOA. I would call weatherby and have them make it right. Im sure they would. Most places will bed a rifle for $100 and the crown another $60.

Sending it back to Weatherby is not a real option. I kissed that goodbye by voiding the warrenty placing a timney trigger in it. It actually shot less than an inch with a couple loads at first. However that soon ended. The bbl fouled crazy bad so I took the JB's to it. a little better it seems now. I clean every 20 rds. It shoots two close together and then throws one way out 1.5" away or so. Does this consistently with many of my loads. I have tried 100 hdy sp w/ imr4831, rl22, magnum, rl25, h1000, imr 7828. 110 ab w/ rl22, rl25, magnum, h1000 imr 7828. 100 B-tip w/ rl22, imr 7828, imr 4831. 100 gr partition w/ rl22, imr7828. 115 b-tip w/ imr 7828. 120 partition w/ imr 7828 and rl25. used fed 215 throughout. Oal of 3.17 to 3.25 throughout. One load with 100 hdy w/ imr 4831 was one ragged hole but at 3200fps i have a couple 25-06 that kick that to the curb. So off to the smith she goes. New crown 90-100 and bed action 125-150 I just got quote. Guess I better expect top notch work. Just purchased a brand new rem 700 sps stainless in 257 Wby so will see how it shoots. Hope this one comes correct after this work. The vanguard has the bbl floated as well.

In my view there is nothing really special about a Vanguard. Why not see how the new .257 shoots and if its good then just sell the Vanguard?

Contact Redneck here, he did a crown, trigger and bedding job on a model 70 for me and did a nice job at a very fair price, plus hes super fast.

I was handling an older Remington 700ADL in 25-06 this
weekend, I was thinking about buying it, but then I noticed
that an inch had been cut from the barrel and the crown job
was sloppy, I figured at least $100 for a crown and passed
it up.

100 for a crown is WAY to much, 30 to 50 bucks should be plenty depending on what type of crown you want.

I was thinking that 90 to 100 is too much. Only thing is I can drive there in 15 min. Saves me the hassle of sending the gun off. Something about that always scares me that it wont come back my way or if things aren't right it becomes a big hassle. I guess I'll pay for convenience. These guys are authorized service for Rem and weatherby I think. Not that it makes them worth more..... Was curious as to what the going rate is however. When it comes time to rebarrel any of my rifles, I will be shopping for skill as well as price however.

I'm thinkin whichever tickles my fancy the most--the other is down the road eventually. Never come close to gettin my money out of the vanguard though. Maybe a local if it shoots lights out will pay a little premium. Gotta shoot lights out though. Was sittin here thinking I should trim the herd but as always, I hate to part with any of my guns. I'm stupid that way. Just go buy another anyway. I figure with about 200 rds through it, with a timney, floated bbl, bedded, crown job, and if its a shooter I might get 600--MIGHT. Maybe much less. For a vanguard, get the regular one, throw a BC medalist on it and maybe a timney if need and be in less than a sub moa and shoot just as well probably. I picked up a vanguard 223 for only 319 at BiMart here in Dec right before x-mas. It shoots pretty decent. At least its consistent with nothing more than a timney.

I'd do the bedding job myself. It isn't that hard.
As for the crown, if you don't like the price then shop around.

I love the way all these "Ex-Spurts" are calling out what's fair,....price wise,.....

Wonder how many carbide profiling inserts they've bought recently,.......or what sorta' lathes they tool feed and water.

self appointed in their " spurts",....I'd have to say.

GO TO BROWNELLs, ( Cat 60)...it's 35 to 95 buck. Obviously skill and demand dependant.

......spurts,......

Actually, according to weatherby's site, the Vanguard is supposed to shoot 1.5" groups or less with factory ammo..

But I digress..

Dufur, is your rifle a 'deluxe' (wood) or synthetic? I do crowns for $40-45, and bedding runs $40-60, depending on the stock configuration... All plus shipping.. Turnaround time would be about 48 hours..

Not only are those prices excellent but the turnaround time of 48 hours is fabulous.

The sub-moa vanguard is suppose to be sub-moa. confused There web site states less than .99.

Yeah, the regular Vanguard is 1.5", but the sub-moa is so-called for a reason. It is guaranteed to shoot 3 shots into a sub-moa group.

Dufur,
Try increasing your OAL on some loads and also try factory WBY ammo with the 100gr Hornady bullet. $250 is plenty high for what you want done.

I have a Mark V 257 and both fouling and bedding issues occurred. I fixed the bedding myself, and went to molly to eliminate fouling. Shoots the lights out now. 1Minute
