I had some Superman comics, but I never really got into the superhero thing - especially not with any of the peripheral players.

IIRC, the hero ("Britt Reid") of the original comic-book series was a descendant of the Lone Ranger

and his valet ("Kato") was a Japanese before the Pearl Harbor attack converted him into a Korean.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong

Seems to me that the theme music for the "Green Hornet" TV series (which I never saw!) was Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee," which was already a classic long before the days of plentiful TVs.

Or maybe I'm thinking of the older "Green Hornet" radio series.

Exactly! Not sure how I forgot that. The first episode almost invariably ended with Batman and/or Robin in some rube goldberg death trap contraption that everyone knew they would escape from. Obviously the villians never watched the show or they would have figured that out after a few episodes.

That's a good one but I think "Secret Agent Man" tops it. Have to put the Hawaii Five-O theme into the mix as well.

I always liked the way that, every time they got in a fight with the bad guys, the Green Hornet would spend the entire time trading punches with one guy while Cato was (literally) kicking serious butt on every other gang member.

FWIW, the actor that played Robin had a brown belt in Karate. However, in TV life Cato would have kicked Robin's behind all over the place. Hell, Robin was supposed to be what, 16 or 17? But he was immune to Catwoman because he's "not old enough to be interested in those kinds of things". Heck, every 13 year old kid I knew would have been on Catwoman (Newmar or Kitt) like white on rice. Little green tighted ******. wink

Combat was another great series for a youngster before someone decided TV was too violent. I well remember Kirby (the BAR man) emptying 20 rounds into the back of a "Kraut" from point blank range. That show and another one set in Italy* was why I studied German in high school.

*forget the name, but it always started with a scene of a flare floating down on a parachute - if anybody remembers that. It would have been on TV around 1962-64 or thereabouts.

Very close, Ken. It is sort of an "arrangement" of Flight of the Bumble Bee. The best ever trumpeter, Rafael Mendez, could play rings around Al Hirt and used the Bumble Bee to open many of his performances. When his two sons got older/better, they all did it in unison!! shocked

IIRCC, the Kung Fu series was Bruce Lee's idea. He tried to get it produced but was repeatedly rebuffed only to find out later that his idea for a series was stolen by those he tried to get to produce it and Carradine the star.

Only other WWII show I can remember from that time was "Garrison's Guerillas" or similar. We're doing our best to hijack this thread. AoC better get back here to save his thread!

The other thing I remember is that the only job on TV more dangerous than wearing a red shirt on Star Trek was to be a newbie with a story to tell on Combat. Dead every time.

On one of my long-lost LPs, two ace trumpet-players triple-tonguing in unison were the stars of Leroy Anderson's "Trumpeter's Lullaby." I loved it! But one of my visiting buddies was even more awesomely impressed

"That cat can flat blow that horn!"

I always enjoyed it even more after that, remembering.

For those interested I just converted the first 30 seconds of the file to a ring tone for my Iphone (.m4r) If your phone uses this type of file for a ring tone and you'd like a copy, just PM me an e-mail address. I can help you get it on your Iphone, but anything else, you're on your own.
