Posted this over on another "forum" by mistake. Mebbe it'll help raise my number to Kahuna status . Anyway, here goes: Other than the obvious differences in cartridge size from say a .308 to 6.5x284 what is involved in regards to altering the feedramp, rails, follower, etc.? Any major machining involved or is it a fairly simple conversion? Thanks for any input.

Hi Karnis,
I can't speak for all actions but...I have made 3 284s on different actions and one 6.5-284 without any modifications. One was a WWII mauser, two were Mark Xs, and one was a Ruger short action that was formerly a 6mm rem.
Based on my limited experience, first get a dummy round and see how it functions in your action. You might not have to do anything.
Another issue that I would concerned with is what style bullet and how it might fit into a short action magazine. That said, it is possible to extend the length of the magazine. My smith lengthened my Ruger short action to a full 3". It allows all sorts of bullets to get close to the rifling and still feed. Currently I am using a 162 A-max .015" off the lands.
Try it and see before you worry about fixing it.

My 25-284 was originally a 7mm-08 (heresy I know) and did not want to feed the bottoms round from the mag. The follower was stamped steel junk and CAS recommended trying a milled SAUM follower. Feeds great now.
Now with even more aplomb

i have built two on remington short actions. one in 35/284 and a straight up 284. i got a milled follower, polished it and the action rails. both fed slicker than sh*t with no pop-ups.

I have several 284 wildcats built on Remington SAs and none have had any work done to them, except for the usual polishing to remove the sharp edges. These include Remington 7s, 700s, and 722s. I don't recall using a 600/660 action for a 284 or 284 based wildcat, but I'm sure that it would work fine. I think that using a SAUM follower is a good idea.

I punched out a 260 Rem to 6.5x284 and had no other work do to it.
It's one of the best feeding rifles I own.
Glad I did it.
I seriously think you would be wasting your money by messing with feedramps and rails.
It will work just fine.

I have handled a few 6.5-284s over the past few years, one was a Howa 1500, all the others were SA 700s.

I'm looking at a potential trade for a Remington Ti in .260, and thinking about punching it to 6.5x284 since my buddy also built one and is reloading for it already. Plus I have no need for a .260, with the Bobs and a 7mm08 in house already.
What would I need to do with the Ti????? Thx!

If you don't care where the factory roll stamps on the barrel are, it is nearly as simple as removing the barrel from the action, applying a 6.5-284 reamer, reinstalling the barrel, checking the headspace, and going to the range.
If you want the factory roll stamps to be where they were when you started, it might take a little more time, but nothing too special.

if the tube is in the lathe, bury the marks. at least the chambering and the remmy info.....
a few thou off the receiver face should send it south..... if the factory chamber marking is up then a 260 will fit in no problem...
FWIW... it is worth it to lap the lugs and square the face on the receiver....
woofer

I've built a couple of hunting rifles (custom barrels) with my no-turn, zero freebore reamer. That permits you to seat the bullet for accuracy and still use the magazine in a SA Rem 700.

Unless I'm just playing with a rifle in a casual manner for myself, I like to have the original roll stamps where they were intended to be and I like to mill the old cartridge stamp off and restamp it with the actual cartridge that the barrel is now chambered for.
I won't sell a rifle that has been rechambered unless the correct cartridge information is stamped on the barrel and the previous cartridge information is removed, not just "X'd" out. I'm kind of strict about this, as I saw what happened to Bearrr264 after he fired a 300 Savage cartridge in a Savage 99 that had been rechambered from 300 Savage to 308, but the barrel stamps still showed it being chambered in 300 Savage. The case seperated and the escaping gas blew the cheeks of the stock out on both sides, giving him a nice assortment of splinters and gas burns on his right hand and the right side of his face. I think that if he had ever found the 'smith who did that work, he would have had strong words with him.
I don't know as if I'd want just anybody machining a titanium action, but squaring the action and lapping the lugs is always a good idea.
