Folks:
Last night, 20-20 had a piece about common myths. One of the myths was related to guns. Here is some of the info from their web site. Seemed pretty straightforward.....
Elwood
America is notorious for its culture of gun violence. Guns sometimes do cause terrible harm, and many kids are killed every year in gun accidents. But public service announcements and news stories make it seem as if the accidents kill thousands of kids every year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, fewer than 100 kids 15 and under are killed in gun accidents every year. Of course that's horrible, and I understand why demonstrators say we need more gun control.
But guess what? The Centers for Disease Control recently completed a review of studies of various types of gun control: background checks, waiting periods, bans on certain guns and ammunition. It could not document that these rules have reduced violent crime. The government wants to say things like the Brady Gun Control Law are making a difference, but they aren't. Some maximum security felons I spoke to in New Jersey scoffed at measures like the Brady law. They said they'll have no trouble getting guns if they want them.
A Justice Department study confirmed what the prisoners said. But get this: the felons say that the thing they fear the most is not the police, not time in prison, but, you, another American who might be armed.
It's a reason many states are passing gun un-control. They're allowing citizens to carry guns with them; it's called concealed carry or right to carry. Some women say they're comforted by these laws.
Many people are horrified at the idea of concealed carry laws, and predict mayhem if all states adopt these laws.
But surprise, 36 states already have concealed carry laws, and not one reported an upsurge in gun crime.

I didn't watch the show but saw a commercial for it. Was very suprised that the media would report anti-gun control facts. Lets hope this is the start of something good.

I too, saw the commercial, but Wifey and I were fixing to watch "Monk". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I thought about taping it to watch later, but figured it would be just another show mouthing lies spread by the antis. That kind of stuff just sends my blood pressuer through the roof.
It's good to har that some of these lies and half truths are starting to be defunked, but I wouldn't break out the party supplies yet. For every one positive, there are lots more negatives. 7mm

7mm,
Valid points all.......but just suppose if ABC (are they the ones that do 20-20?) was inundated with emails from responsible gun owners commending them for debunking some myths about gun ownership? Networks want viewers, we want the 2nd ammendment upheld, hmmm...... perhaps some well worded thank yous and some favorable disposition towards the sponsors (advertisers) of such programs from a bunch of us might prompt the trend to continue. I don't think it would necessarily advance our position if they get hit with " It's about @##$%% time, you got your sh5%^ together and reported the truth. " type of emails, but well thought out, concise replies of gratitude, just might inspire them to do more, if they do more and it increases their ratings...well you know, monkey see monkey do in tv land. Perhaps TV could become worthwhile again. Just something to think about and it only costs us all a few minutes of time, no postage, no cost involved, just much the same as we do here, but instead of preaching to the choir, we just might reach the sinners. 1ak

I watched the program and especially the segment mentioned and John Stossel is my new hero.
His report was more than balanced, as he debunked most of the BS and emotion spewed forth by the Rosie's and Brady's of the country and instead relied on scientific surveys and studies to prove that gun control cannot and does not work. The interviews with jailhouse inmates where they admitted they won't rob a house if they don't know if the owner has a gun or not was especially telling and supported the stand most law abiding gun owners use to support their rights to own guns. In the interview, I found it especially interesting that the concealed gun owners interviewed were all women and all supported the right to carry a weapon to protect themselves. One had actually killed a home invasion robber after being shot herself.
Could it possibly be that some people on these programs and networks are really getting it? Personally, I'd love to have a tape of that program to show when confronted by emotional, frothing-at-the-mouth gun control nazis. -Sheister

I think those networks are thinking along the lines of the Democrats. They got so beat up in the last election that they are laying low about gun control. But make no mistake, they still have the agenda. It always irked me that the Center for Disease Control was govt funded and the espoused so much gun control. If I rememeber right theya rethe one sthat wnated doctors to convince thier patinece to get rid of all the guns in thier houses. It's good that they did the peice , but I wouldn't trust Jennings, Rather or any other of those types.

I heartily commend John Stossel for his program and book, and am very happy that such honesty made it on such a major broadcast. Stossel is a libertarian/independent and ready to expose idiocy and dishonesty no matter the politics. He has built a significant viewership of those who want this integrity of reporting, or at least want to watch the rats scurry as they are exposed
I am certain, however, that the network aired his special edition of 20-20 due to the share that Stossel brings rather than any commitment to honest reporting. I, also, heard in a radio interview that he is essentially shunned by his colleagues. I see no lessening of media anti-second bias here only a share number too high to pass up,
