I went to barnes web site to shop for bullets to reload in my daughters 250. They only list 100 gr. boatails and 115 gr. flat base. Did they recently drop the smaller bullets in .257? If so is there any old stock 75-90 gr. x or tsx out there? Tom W.

Barnes used to offer 75gr. original "X" bullets under their discontinued items banner. Don't see them there anymore.

There is some old stock of 75 and 85 grain original "X"s out there, but getting the owners to part with them is probably tougher than finding them in the 1st place. The 75 grain original "X" might be the perfect deer bullet in the 250-3000, 'cause you can shoot it fast/flat and get sufficient penetration.
The 87 grain Speer HotCore is also a good fast/flat bullet that gives good penetration in 1 in 14" twist .257" bore rifles.

Unless you're shooting giant 250+ pound whitetails, any good bullet will work in a 250 Savage.Try a Hornady 117 grain RN-they stabilize out of some 1-14 250's,and they will plunk a deer pretty damn hard.

Tried them out of one of my pre-mil 99's in 250.. hit the target going sideways at 100 yards. Haven't tried them in any others.

It might just be the one I tried it in.. got plenty left, I'll try them in another one.
The Speer 87gr Hot Core's did fine for me on antelope. Haven't tried it on a deer yet.

I used to swear by the Sierra 90 grain BTHP in the medium capacity .257" bore cartridges, but after a couple of failures, I no longer use them for game. It is a great varmint bullet, but I think that it is too fragile to be sure of generating enough penetration to get to where it needs to. Unless you subscribe to the "Texas heart shot", the 87 grain Speer HotCore will stay together and generate enough penetration to get to and through the vitals.

Since antler restrictions took effect a few years ago we are seeing older, bigger bucks and with bear season open for part of the deer season I want my daughter to have the best medicine. At least for now she will not hunt with any rifle but her beloved 250. Thanks for the suggestions. Tom W.

I would suggest trying the 100 grain Partition and 117 grain Hornady or Remington RN. As WCB noted, some 1 in 14" twist 250-3000s will shoot the 117 grain RNs while others won't, so you'll need to buy a box and give them a try.

I got all caught up in the light weight bullet idea for the 250-3000 last winter & found 75 grain regular X bullets (not TSX) on Barnes' website as clearance items. Haven't checked to see if any are still there.
